Jackie Fletcher has won compensation for her son

Who was damaged by MMR.

She's the founder of JABS and it has taken 18 years to get the compensation.

I was interested in the description of her son's reaction in the Sunday Times as it is very like the reaction someone I know had (that child is also now severely disabled - in that case the paediatrician said it was likely that MMR had triggered the problem but it would be impossible to ever be certain).

Interesting - is there a link? (although I suspect that, like me,you are on ipod, so can't link!)

Will have a hunt a bit later

WhatsWrongWithYou · 29/08/2010 13:47

Found this article on it - seems remarkably balanced for the DM.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 29/08/2010 14:04

Finally - an acknowledgement from the Govt. She's right though, it's a derisory amount, which makes you wonder if they are bracing themselves for many more claims to come forward.

Sorry silver - am on iPod. It's in today's Sunday Times. Ironic as I have refused to buy it for ages becsuse of Brian Deer. Weirdly the Mail has often had some of the most sensible MMR reporting.

There are open access articles here:

BBC

Telegraph

Press Association

All make it clear that this does not relate to Autism but to convulsions leading to epilepsy.

This ruling has been made "on the balance of probabilities" and relates to the mechanism through which measles can cause epilepsy after fever and convulsions.

It seems unlikely that this will alter the legal environment for those who claim that MMR is implicated in the development of Austism.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 29/08/2010 19:26

Who mentioned autism?

The children I am thinking of have learning disabilities as their main issue. They spent time in icu or hdu following post mmr seizures.

You do know autism isn't one thing don't you?

It's a crap payout but pleased for her - she has fought years and years for this. Bloody disgusting that it was such a battle.

The government have always acknowledged that some vaccines may cause some harm in some children. That's why the vaccine compensation scheme exists.
Imo though JABS is an inflammatory and scaremongering organisation. No doubt they will see this as some sort of victory and use it to further harm public health in this country

saintlydamemrsturnip · 29/08/2010 19:52

If they're so quick to acknowledge it why has it taken her 18 years? Why have people I know been told by their peadiatricians that MMR has probably damaged their child but there isn't enough evidence for a payout.

JABS is more interested in children who have been damaged than the vaccination programme. If that's scaremongering so be it. No-one else cares.

One of the chief writers for the Daily Mail has a son with autism which (I believe he has speculated) may have been caused by the MMR.

I'm rather appalled that lots of threads are being labelled scaremongering atm when personally I find it very useful to hear about these things.

When I was making vaccination decisions, JABS were extremely useful.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 29/08/2010 21:24

Agree - JABS is very helpful in supporting parents who are faced with a one size fits all approach from the DoH.

Appletrees · 29/08/2010 23:05

At last.

And scaremongering? Like about say swine flu? The non existent threatened epidemics of childhood diseases to push people into "boosters"? I am guessing you kinda don't really count that.

DBennett · 31/08/2010 09:33

"The non existent threatened epidemics of childhood diseases"

I personally don't want to compare/conflate the issue of vaccine safety and pandemic flu but if you insist on doing so:

mortality map here.

Best estimate to date: 10,000 people died.

MariaBN6 · 13/11/2010 15:43

But don't 1000s of people die of flu every year?
Here's a couple of articles from WDDTY (you won't be able to read the whole article unless subscribed)

WHO officials 'in pay of drugs industry' during swine flu alert
09 June 2010
As WDDTY revealed to subscribers of its journal last month, several officials at the World Health Organization were in the pay of leading drug companies when last year?s swine flu scare was declared an epidemic. The moment the WHO increased the threat level to phase 6, or epidemic, multi-billion contracts that drug companies had set up with health agencies around the world were automatically triggered. Today, drug companies that offered anti-virals are counting the pennies. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) recently announced a surge in first-quarter revenues of 17 per cent because of £698m ($1bn) of sales of its Pandemrix swine-flu shots. The European Parliament and an independent team are separately investigating the WHO?s role so-called epidemic ? and especially its connections to the drugs industry. As WDDTY has revealed, several drug companies were sponsoring influential WHO committees that were advising on the spread of the swine flu (H1N1) virus, and several WHO advisors have admitted they were receiving payments from drug firms. (Source: WDDTY. 2010; vol 21, no 3 (June): 7-8; BMJ, 2010; 340: c2912).

Swine flu pandemic scare 'one of greatest medical scandals of century', says EU chief

03 February 2010
The swine flu pandemic scare was one of the greatest medical scandals of the century, and was engineered to increase the profits of the drug companies, says the health chief in the European Council. The council is to begin an investigation into the role of the drug companies, and how they influence ?independent? authorities such as the World Health Organization, after they passed a resolution from Wolfgang Wodarg, chairman of the Council?s health committee. Dr Wodarg, who is an epidemiologist and former health director in Germany, has followed the swine flu (H1N1 virus) pandemic story unfold. ?It is one of the greatest health scandals of the century,? he says. ?We have had a mild flu ? and a false pandemic.? The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a pandemic last year, and health authorities around the world ordered in large stocks of vaccines. In the UK, chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson predicted 65,000 deaths in the UK, and convinced the government to place a £1bn order for swine flu vaccine. In the event, 251 people in the UK have died from the virus, and the government is now desperately trying to offload vast stocks of the vaccine. Wodarg claims that governments have sealed contracts with drug companies that are triggered when a virus is classified as pandemic. ?In this way the producers of vaccines are sure of enormous gains without having any financial risks. So they just wait until the WHO says ?pandemic? and activates the contracts.? (Source: www.wodarg.de/english/3013320.html)
