DD vomits when we visit the beach- ideas anyone please?

DD 4 has a pretty strong constitution but recently has vomited (sorry if TMI) pretty much out of the blue at the beach on three seperate occasions.

First time we had only been there 15 minutes ish, said she had something "funny in her mouth", became distresed, then was sick. She seemed fine afterwards.

Second and third times we had been there a while and eaten. She said she felt funny and needed a drink NOW, became distressed, and then was sick. Again she was fine afterwards.

She loves the beach and does get pretty stuck in. I have wondered if she's getting salt water / sand in her mouth or swallowing it but she's fairly careful about not doing this- so it would most likely only be small amounts.

Until now she has only been sick once since she was a baby so its very unusual for her.

Every time we have been at a different beach.

Can any wise mumsnetters shed any light on this? We love the beach but this has made me a bit nervous and I am having to resist wrapping her in cotton wool when we go.

Is she allergic to anything you know of?

inabigpickle · 28/08/2010 23:07

Not that I know of Houseofbamboo. She eats pretty much anything and I have never known her to have an allergic reaction to anything.

We have 'done' the beach thing loads of times with no issues. Its just the last three visits that we have had this problem- its really strange and not very nice for her poor thing......

How odd, was going to suggest nerves / carsickness but if she has been before many times with no probs that doesn't seem likely.

This happened to me when I was little. The reason was a type of motion sickness. I would watch the waves go in and out and feel like I was moving. Then I would become quite dizzy and start vomiting.

Thanks House and Lynli. I know its frustrating when someone asks for advice on MN and then rejects it but I don't think it would be motion sickness from the sea as the tide has been a long way out- we were in rockpools every time.

Nerves is a great suggestion but again I'm not sure as she's quite used to the beach and not very nervous (on the outside at least).

Thanks very much for the suggestions though.......

Hopefully it will disappear never to happen again Smile

If not, I guess shellfish allergy might be something to look out for as sometimes just handling them can cause symptoms, so I guess maybe rockpools might have traces or something.

My two children both really hate the smell of seaweed and it has been known to make them gag a bit.

inabigpickle · 28/08/2010 23:39

Really hoping you are right and it disappears soon House. Maybe I will try a trip without the rockpool exploring to see what happens without any contact with shellfish or seaweed.

Namey- do your DCs actually tell you that the smell is bothering them? DD has never mentioned it but would be great if this is the cause as all we have to do is steer clear of the seaweed!

Yes - they both go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about going to the beach, as only little kids know how!

As soon as we get there they start complaining about the smell!

Obviously some beaches are worse than others for seaweed.
