Re usable sanitaty pads

Yeah - sorry for being gross and that.

I had a mirena coil installed (!) a couple of months ago. I had really really heavy periods before that.

I'm spotting like a fiend at the moment and I'm lead to believe this will go on for a few more months. Paper sanitary pads, which I have to use everyday are making me itchy and err a bit sore down there.

I wondered if anyone had tried reusable cloth type pads and whether they would recommend?

I'm not particularly heavy just this spotting thing.

You're not being gross at all.
I have used cotton sanitary pads for several years and find them great.
They are far more eco-friendly, cheaper and better for your body. My DS is still in nappies, so I just wash them together with those.
Personally, I use Ella's House brand pads, but I'm sure there are lots of different ones out there.
You should certainly give them a go.

I haven't tried cloth myself, but just an idea, apparently all pads have some plastic in them which will make you sweaty, except the big postpartum ones. Do you have some of those?

Also, could you use a mooncup, or is that tricky because of the coil?

paisleyleaf · 27/08/2010 18:40

Those minkee ones are lovely and soft. Available from weenotions or luxury moon. - they come out of the wash lovely too.

Spinkle · 27/08/2010 18:45

I'm not sure I'd need a mooncup everyday - and I'm not even sure you can use one with the coil - strings might be an issue.

Will look into though.

Thanks for the recommendations - am about to google away Smile

i have a few from weenotions - as a hijack i am thinking of a mirena myself and use a mooncup at the unhappy time of the month - can you not use one with the coil as this could be a deal breaker for me now.......

Spinkle · 27/08/2010 18:58

I'm imagine that they looked very cool indeed!!

Having had a quick browse I see there's more out there than I imagined...

None of the pads I use have any plastic in them at all. For example, Ella's House pads are cotton on the the outside with a hemp layer inside to give absorbency.
I use a mooncup too. Using my mooncup and cotton pads together makes me feel extra eco-friendly!

With regards to using a mooncup with a coil, I have just copied this off the mooncup website:

There should be no problem with an I.U.D as long as you remember to place the Mooncup low down in the vagina and take care to release the seal properly when removing the Mooncup.
When an I.U.D is first placed, please wait one whole period before using the Mooncup. This will help the I.U.D settle in. Also, it?s a good idea to ask your GP/clinic if they can trim the IUD strings to keep them short. You should continue to check your IUD strings periodically to make sure it hasn't been dislodged.

Spinkle · 27/08/2010 19:37

Thanks for that. Problem is, since I've had the coil I haven't really stopped bleeding for more than half a day. I was also concerned that I might feel the mooncup if I have to wear it 'low'. I've never used tampons because I used to 'feel' them all the time (and hated it)

I was kind of hoping I might be one of the lucky people who have no periods with the mirena at all....
