Hi

Am looking for some help - does anyone know ? My dad was admitted to hospital with blood sugars of 31. Can high blood sugars be caused by an infection ?

when DH was diagnosed with diabetes he had been having readings of 27-36 over the course of a week (we suspected diabetes and bought a testing kit and tested regularly for a week but TBH we didnt really understand the readings! in the book it said normal was between 5-8 but obviously we thought that was wrong cos DH was so high but he wasnt ill!)

I don't know as much as others because I am not diabetic but Dad and brother are. 31 is very high, and yes, it can be caused (often is) by infection eg flu, stomach virus, pneumonia, etc etc. My Dad has had levels up there and down to zero but is still more or less ok, if that helps? High sugar levels suddenly cause problems but if sugar levels come down then he should be ok. Longer term raised sugar levels affect things such as small blood vessels so can cause foot and eyesight problems some of which can be severe. Sounds as though he will be under the care of a diabetic consultant so his team should be able to help with questions. Hope he feels better soon

Yeah thanks for the advice.

They think he has a lung infection and are trying to get his blood sugars down before doing further investigation - cat scan

My grandma's recently been in hospital with sugars of over 30. She had a chest infection and they said that, alongside steroids was causing the higher sugars. Much better now the infection is gone.

When i was diagnosed with type 1 as a kid my levels were in the 40s!!

31 is high - but if he is poorly with an infection they will put him on a sliding scale infusion to stabilise it. I once nursed someone who was admitted with a BM of 50+
