Contraceptive pills that might help with PMS? Or anything else that might help?

Had a bit of an unsatisfactory chat to the locum at my GP surgery about contraceptives and side effects of the pill etc I've suffered from depression a bit in the past and wanted his advice about what might or might not be a good idea pill-wise under the circumstances - but he got a bit side-tracked and started talking about over population and whether DH had considered sterilisation Hmm (We have 2 DDs and probably don't want more but might IYSWIM)

Anyway, now that periods have started again post breastfeeding the PMS has come back with avengeance - horrendous, the slightest setback or irritation can make me want to smash things - has anyone found anything (or any contraceptive pill) that has helped reduce PMS symptoms?

Thanks muchly

In my experience the only thing that worked was taking the pill on an extended cycle so as to have fewer periods. I have pretty bad PMS (emotional symptoms and bad headaches), it's the changes in hormone levels that cause the problems, so if you keep your hormone levels steady by not skipping the pills every month, you don't get the symptoms.

I don't see why it shouldn't be OK to stop periods altogether this way, but a GP advised me it was better not to do that (not sure why). But 4 times a year has got to be better than 12+...

I've heard good things about the Mirena IUS, some women find it stops/reduces their periods and associated symptoms.

I hope you find something that works for you, I know how miserable it can be :(

You should probably look at your nutritional state, also some supplements can really help such as B vits, eveningprimrose oil etc, even St Johns Wort can be useful.
