Can the doctor help with this?

I've got a doctors appointment tomorrow and I'd think it would help me to know what sort of help I can expect. If anything at all.

I'm on day 16 of what I think is a really heavy period. It's been heavy since day 1 and shows no sign of letting up. I'm having to change a super plus tampon and an always maxi night towel every hour/hour and a half during the day, and about every 3 hours during the night. There's been some clotting - notably a whopper on Sunday which I could barely hold in my hands (v sorry for the vileness).

I do have a large intramural fibroid (about grapefruit size) which I'm used to, but I've never had a period like this before.

I was expecting a heavy period because my last cycle was a bit odd, with spotting when I expected a period and then nothing until this bleeding which has happened about when the following period was due (confused? I hope not). But I wasn't expecting anything like this. My vag is sore from too many tampons for too long.

I did get half a line on a hpt around the time of the spotting, but assumed it was a faulty test, so don't think that can have much to do with it.

Is there anything the doc can do to sort out this bleeding; I am struggling to keep up with normal life because of it.

I don't know whether the doctor will be able to help, but if he can't, he will certainly refer you to a gynecologist who will be able to.
What you describe is far from normal and you certainly need help and checking.
Good luck tomorrow.

I've been trying to be pregnant for over 2 years - but after all this bleeding I really don't think I can be. Even if the half a line was in fact a proper BFP.

The bleeding has been horrible - 16 days of it just coming out of me like water from a tap. I am heartily sick of it.

It sounds as though the doc won't be able to do much - I'm sort of hoping for a magic pill Grin.

Pixie - it seems you were spot on. The doc has confirmed it is/was a miscarriage. The half a line had more significance than I thought.

He has prescribed a 10 day course of progesterone which will apparently stop the bleeding. He said to expect a small bleed at the end of the course, and then things should go back to normal. If they don't go back to normal, then I'll be sent for a scan and see if there's any retained tissue.

Thanks for your help last night; it helped to have it confirmed that what I was experiencing wasn't normal, and that I wasn't wasting the docs time by making an appointment.

So sorry to read this Daisy, hope you are ok?

galwaygal · 26/08/2010 13:11

daisy - can i ask how the doc confirmed the m/c? Did you have a scan? Did you have blood tests to check hcg levels?

Sorry the reason I ask is that it is possible to be pregnant without hcg rising high and bleeding (even heavy bleeding with clots) in pregnancy does not directly indicate miscarriage. You should be seen by an early pregnancy unit and scanned now.

The progesterone will help stop the bleeding hopefully, but by stopping it suddenly you could induce a m/c regardless of whether it was already happening naturally.

I hope you get a scan soon to confirm things for you.

Well, no.

He's based his diagnosis on half a line on an HPT a few weeks ago and on my description of what's come out of me during this period.

Now I don't know what to do. I have had a negative hpt in the last week or so so assume that if there was anything, there isn't now.

Should I push for a scan? I feel a bit lost tbh.

Don't want to leave you hanging, but have no advice/knowledge.

Do you feel confident in GP's diagnosis? Why not try to speak to GP on phone to discuss these concerns?
Or phone NHS direct?

I've gone with the doctor's advice and am happy I have. I am also very glad I know what caused the problem and that there was a very good reason for my completely mucked up cycle.

Thank you for all of your help though. It's still much appreciated.
