Have to give DD a suppository - any top tips to make it easy/non-traumatic?

DD is 7. I want to appear cool, calm and in control so that she's relaxed. I've never done it before ... so obviously I'm a bit concerned about it and hurting her. Am also not sure how far I'll need to push it in - does about 3/4's inch sound about right?

Really appreciate any advice.
TIA.

I am sure it wil not hurt - tell her it the very best way to have drugs as it doesn't menan swallowing.

I do seem to remeber lube being used to make it easy - have you got any lube?

Hi, I'm a childrens nurse and it really isnt too bad to do.getting her to lie on her left side is best but not essential use some lubricant or if itis a glcerin supository get it wet.
If you seem calm and confident I'm sure your DD is more likely tobe
Hope this helps

Snowstorm · 25/08/2010 19:49

Thanks for getting back to me.

I WILL be calm and confident on the outside! I know it'll be okay after the first time but I'm sure it's completely normal to be a bit anxious to begin with.

Will be confident and lie her on her left hand side. Don't have any lubricant ... unless you count Vaseline but I'm guessing not.

How far do you have to push it in?

I would think vaseline is fine. I had to insert my first ever supossitory at age 31 to stop me being sick on a flight abroad.

Vaseline helped, but it was just sort of sucked up by my arse muscles without having to be pushed in very far at all. Grin

GardenersDelight · 25/08/2010 20:03

vaseline might be abit thick if you've got a bland crem like aqueous or E45 that would be ok.
Probably need to pushjust so your finger goes inside as you said prob 3/4 inch

Okay, did that. Was a glycerin one so dipped it in water ... whereupon it became a slippery little bgger and it was an effort to make it go anywhere I wanted it to go! DD and I did all right and it went in (sucked up was about right kneehightoagrasshoper*) and she felt a bit funny but we figured that was normal and all was well.

However, unfortunately she had to go to the loo and did a poo less than 10 minutes later and so I'm not sure that it did her any good at all. It's to soften her poos as she's had hard ones of late and split her bottom a bit (poor little thing) and apparently this poo hurt her and so she's lost confidence in the suppository. Put some numbing stuff on her, gave her some Calpol stuff and left it at that ... might try again another night but knew that it wouldn't be a good idea to put another one in tonight - physically or mentally for her.

In any case, thank you SO much everyone for getting back to me. It really did help as it gave me enough confidence to make it all right for her ... have done it once, next time will be easier.

Hi, just to recap, get your daughter to lie on her left side and pull her knees up to her chin, have a tissue with the suppository a few cm away. Use your left hand on her buttock to lift and separate the buttocks, put about 1cm of lubricant on the pulp of your right index finger, gently massage it onto the anus and then gently put the suppository in pointed end first, the sphincter will relax and allow the suppository to ease in, you may need to push the end a few mm until it is 'sucked in'. Use the tissue to wipe away any spare lube and the whole thing takes less than 10 seconds.

It is normal for the presence of anything in the rectum to provoke bowel emptying and the MOST MOST important thing is to use lubricant, if not you can cause some serious damage and pain, especially if she has has fissures in the past. KY jelly is probably best but anything oily will generally do, even olive oil has been used, be a little careful with vaseline though as it is quite thick and may miss a bit whereas oil will coat the whole thing.

You will rapidly become quite slick.Smile

Snowstorm, I have had to use glycerin suppositories with my DD1 for her constipation, and having a poo in less than 20 minutes is the outcome every time. It will probably have made the poo easier, but anal fissures are going to make any poo a bit sore. Sad

I didn't use lubricant with them, as the directions said to wet it and then it became very slippery (and DD1 didn't have anal fissures at the times I've had to use these). She didn't like the suppositories, but she did understand that they would take away the pain in her stomach so tolerated them. I got better at putting them in too.

The time between putting the suppository in and the poo coming out was usually spent having some 'special' time, just her and I, reading stories in my bed, so there was something nice about the whole experience for her.

Hope your DD feels better soon.

Thank you for the detail aliasdictus and for the additional info Poledra. Didn't know that it was common for suppositories to bring on a poo. The doctor gave me some numbing cream and it occurs to me that if I apply this before putting the suppository in then it will numb the area a little bit and be on there for when the resulting poo comes through XX minutes later. Hmmmm ... it's a thought.

DD1 doesn't have constipation, she has hard poos. She's some sort of syrupy medicine twice a day, has to drink orange juice (apparently good for loosening stools - I didn't know that), I'm trying to get her to drink more water inbetween meals (but not so much that it becomes an issue) and then we have the numbing cream and the suppositories are a sort of last resort.

Will see how today goes and may try again tonight. Hope we break this cycle soon - thought we had, it had been going so well.

That's probably a good idea to try with the numbing cream as the less it hurts the more relaxed she'll be so the less it hurts IYSWIM
