Blackouts and migraines?Seriously worried

Ok, so mumsnet probably not the best place for this, but today my DH came home from work in a right old state. He had a 5 minute 'blackout' at work, and then goes on to tell me that he has been having 'blank spells,' for a while. He is booked in to the docs in the morning, but I'm sat here worrying, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience of this kind of thing.

He has suffered from migraines on and off since he was a teen (29 now) and is constantly tired and is a very poor sleeper. He is also under extreme pressure at work, and I know the stress is affecting him in a big way. This 'blackout' today followed a particularly stressful experience. He said he just 'came to' on the floor and didn;t know where he was for a while. He was very fatigued afterwards, and went straight to bed.

During the blank spells he describes, he says he just 'comes to' and seems to have missed a few seconds or minutes. He said he feels tired after these episodes, although they don;t necessarily seem linked to stressful experiences.

He has been having a lot of headaches lately, although I wouldn't describe them as migraines.

So my question is - could these things be related and what might be casing them? By the time I read the responses he will have probably been to the GPs and will have an answer!

Too late for me to do anything other than wish you luck at the GP. I am sure the GP will refer to a neurologist for investigation, if she doesn't please ask.

Good luck to your DH at the GP!

Def worth seeing a neurologist who will certainly recommend a scanner. It could be a TIA - transitory ischemic attack. High blood pressure, linked to stress, may have started it.
Let us know what the GP said

Any news?

No sorry! Doc cancelled appt as they were short staffed (typical) so he has re-arranged for tomorrow morning. I'll post something then. I've been doing a bit of looking around and I have a feeling it might be linked to migraines. Well, I hope so! Thanks for asking though, it's really kind of you.

I'd agree that he needs to be referred to a neurologist and have an MRI scan as soon as possible just to rule out anything serious. I've been suffering from migraines on and off for about five years and in April, during a migraine, I had a small stroke. I'm 45 and don't have any of the health issues which normally cause strokes. Turns out I have a hole in my heart (Patent Foramen Ovale, PFO) and they think this is what caused the stroke. Might be a good idea for your DH to have some tests if only to rule it out? The test for PFO is called a bubble echocardiogram.

Hope this helps (and doesn't sound alarming), and that it turns out to be something straightforward and easy to fix.
