Hello wise mumsnetters I'm hoping one of you will be able to save me from going bald.

After the birth of my first daughter 2 years ago, about 75% of my hair fell out. I know hair loss happens to most women after pregnancy, but even my GP said I was one of the extreme cases. After the birth of DD2, nearly 3 months, I was hoping to get away with it, but unfortunately it looks like it's going to happen again. There is hair EVERYWHERE, and after only a few weeks on noticeable loss, it's already looking muuuuch thinner.

Thhis time round I started taking a standard skin hair and nails supplement after the birth. But, I was wondering if any of you knew anything I could be doing to help minimise the loss. I'm sure not, but I thought it was worth asking!!! Please help me!!

my sister has thinning hair, after blood tests doc said her iron count was low so shes been taking iron tablets (her youngest is 2 now). It runs in the family I tried some too and seems to be helping. Must be worth a try, with a multi vitamin too maybe?

Ooh, iron, I'll get some floradix tomorrow! Thanks Von. Anyone else???

I second Iron I used spatone very easy to digest-also a kelp supplement - good hairdresser to minimise how bad it looked and patience- I reckon it was 4 years before back to former glory- but is very thick and curly-this type of hair seems to be worst affected.I feel for you - wont last forever

my mother in law had severe hairloss after trauma of surgery and I took her some pure Silvikrin to rub into her scalp. It helped immensely.

Protein is also important for healthy hair growth. If you are getting a blood test for iron then ask for protein as well. Eat a diet with lots of lean protein ie chicken, fish, pulses etc.

I get pretty bad hairloss from about 3-6 months post natal as well and I HATE it! I have just had my hair cut very short and am loving it: easy to look after, much much less mess everywhere and people tell me it suits me Grin.

BTW, did you have particularly luscious lock during pregnancy? The hair we are losing now is all the hair we did NOT lose whilst expecting.

And the stoopid short regrowth bugs me almost as much as the lot falling out in the first place!

Thanks for all your advice, I'll give it a go!

I have long curly hair and suffered hair loss (and brittle hair) at the front due to illness. I take spatone iron water sachets daily with orange juice. I eat protein (meat, eggs, fish, almonds, low fat dairy) with each meal and snack. I've held off the highlights :( and get my hair cut (in long layers) 8 weekly. I dont want to get it cut short though, so i use hair bands and clips to disguise the front. I am going to try clip in hair extensions for the front. Also ive started using kerastase products - look on their website for suitable products and supplements. I've had saunas and head massage recommended to stimulate the hair follicles. My hair is very slowly growing at the front now but i have lost my confidence a bit- so u have my sympathy. Good luck x

Ooh, marking this thread as I lost loads last time. The worst bit is the 'mullet' effect you get as it grows back, followed by 'square hair'!

CrazyOVERbaby · 26/08/2010 08:28

It's interesting as I have really curly hair - must be linked. Going to get my hair done today so I'll see what the hairdresser says!!

Just rediscovered Mumsnet after a few years away and saw this discussion. I lost loads of hair after my sone was born and it continued dropping out for a few years. I went to a tricologist and tried expensive lotions and then Nourkrin from Boots all to little effect but I did find that over time it did just seem to stop and I think it had a lot to do with no longer stressing over it and eating a lot better....as others have said Iron is a huge factor I think and I really wasn't eating enough good food when I was a new mum. My hair is still not back to the pre pregnancy thickness but the receeding hairline at the front has gone and I dont seem to lose as much hair anymore when brushing
