Metformin? Any experience?

I m/c d at end of July and have now been prescribed Metformin which sounds like it could help, I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it? Any successful PGs? I had previous diagnosis of PCOS and I'm diabetic, those facts are apparently relevant to prescription.

hi Sunnyside - I've got PCOS and an underactive thyroid and tried for about 18 months to get pregnant without success. Was very overweight (4 stone), so my thyroid consultant told me to lose weight and he'd stick me on Metformin. I lost 3 stone and within 4 months of being on the Metformin I was pregnant! I'm sure it was down to the combination of losing weight and taking it - and I felt TONS better..!

I stopped taking Metformin as soon as I found out I was pregnant (on the consultant's advice) and it all went really well.

Good luck!!

Dot - I think I'm about 4 stone overweight too. I lost 5 stones just before conceiving DS but half of it due to serious illness. DS is now 13months old and consultant feels reason I've piled on may be due to PCOS. I've been taking 500mg of met. since last Wed. and have just increased to 750mg today. So far I haven't had any side effects. Do you think that means it won't help me shed the extra weight?

Hi,
It should help you with the weight loss, but my consultant told me that exercise with Metformin is the key - better than dieting. He was right - I started power walking 2 - 3 times a week - just 30 minutes up and down a big hill near work! That really seemed to help and the weight came off more easily than it's ever done before. (and needless to say I've put it all back on now ds is here...).

So maybe try exercising, although I know how hard it is to find time to do any - I was lucky in that I work, so had time in lunch breaks to go for walks.
