How much pain should I be in after wrist surgery ?

15 days ago I broke 6 bones in my wrist and dislocated it. 2 days later had the dislocation reduced and an external fixator put on, then 2 days after that a capal tunnel decompression as was having a lot of nerve compression issues.

On Thurs I had my scaphoid and lunate fixed with screws, a big k wire, and a cast put on. Woke up in agony, had to have the cast split, several doses of morphine

Now back at home, but it is really, really painful, and a lot of burning pain. Nothing is comfortable. Taking diclofenac, paracetamol and codeine, and not really coping

Should it be better than this ? Would it be unreasonable to ring my gp tomorrow and see if they can do anything ?

Oh yes see if they can do anymore for you, sounds agony. :( Had op on wrist last year so sending you lots of wrist healing vibes.

60mg of codeine a time - ward wouldn't discharge me with tramadol, even though they offered it to me the week before on the trauma ward

belledefluffybunny was really helpful to me when i had bad wrist, will ask her to come look at thread, she might not know but worth a shot

I'm here. Bloody hell, you did a good job. To be honest 9and I'm sorry), it's going to take a long while for this to heal. The carpel bones in your wrist have cartilage inbetween them that would have been damaged, there's also ligament damage, soft tissue damage and the damage to the bones. Pop and see your GP and get whatever pain killers you can, ibuprofen will help with the inflammation.
Burning pain is more likely to be the nerves miss firing, I get this almost constanly because I have MS (you don't have this), my nerves miss fire and cause the burning. Your GP can prescribe something for this (I get provigil but have never taken it). Try to rest it as much as you can but remember to slowly move your fingers. Are you booked in for some physio?

CMOTdibbler · 23/08/2010 09:10

Thanks all - have a gp appointment at 12.10.
No physio booked, and v limited finger movement, but try to at least passively move them

I had naproxen a while ago which is prescribed for arthritis. It bloody works.

might be something they would consider if the pain is not able to be sorted out physically.

Sorry it is so bad.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 23/08/2010 10:59

You really need some physio on that to get things moving again. I hope all goes well at the GP (I hope they give you drugs), remember to tell him/her about the burning sensation as this requires a different pain killer sometimes.

CMOTdibbler · 23/08/2010 16:21

gp has given me tramadol and instructions to go back on Weds if still suffering. But it feels loads better generally already though nerve pain still going weell - she didn't want to prescribe anything specific for it in case it masked anything going on with the nerve issues

Ohh, tramadol. Careful with this, it makes people very sleepy. I'm pleased you have something sorted.
