Anyone ever had the halo/aura bit but no headache?

Hi! Yes, I get this every few months, aura comes on - lasts about 30 mins - moves across my vision one side to the other - then goes and sometimes I then get a second one, sometimes just the one. No pain with it at all, just the visual disturbance. I asked the doc as I only started getting these after the birth of my second DS, and she said it is hormonal and she gets them like that herself too - she said "It's like looking through rippling water, right?" which is exactly what it is. I also have another friend, who gets them too when she is stressed, again started after having children, and again Aura but no pain, although hers is a bit different as the Aura comes on and then fades, doesn't drift across her vision - she thinks hers is stress related. I think I tend to get mine when I am tired/stressed AND have not drunk enough liquid that day... I have tried laying down with my eyes shut, sleeping and ignoring them, nothing makes a jot of difference in terms of getting rid of them, so now I just try my best to ignore them and carry on.... bit of a pain if I am needing to drive as that is not really possible with the Aura but other than that I just have to try and look around the Aura as best I can. i take it you have just started getting them?

Last summer I had a few episodes of whirling peripheral vision in one eye. I then had an episode where I felt confused/couldn't get my words out for a few moments. Passed off by itself, saw the GP - ECG and bloods were fine so she said it's just migraine.

Weirdly I was telling a friend about this yesterday, and said that I'd had no similar symptoms since seeing the GP, and within half an hour my right eye had gone funny and I was really struggling to get words out properly, mixing up letters and generally rambling. She was a bit freaked out I think, but I'd been sitting squinting in bright sun, so we just came inside and it passed off within half an hour.

Am assuming it was just the same again but I'm 35 weeks pregnant with DC2 and my BP has been a little bit on the high side so they're checking it weekly. I've had nothing since yesterday so assuming not pre-eclampsia but just wondered if anyone else had anything similar - nice to know I'm not alone :)

My husband gets what he calls "lights" but no headache - a cup of sweet tea usually sees it off quickly for him.

If I don't eat regularly everything starts to shimmer and I need to eat something quickly - but I don't get a headache with it.

hormonesnomore · 21/08/2010 20:22

I get these. My symptoms are only being able to see half of everything, then i see a shimmering star which gets bigger until it fills my field of vision. This lasts for about 15 minutes, then gradually gets smaller until it disappears. After half an hour I'm fine.

I never have a headache with it (rarely get headaches unless they're wine-induced anyway).

This describes mine almost exactly. I've had them since I was 15, usually just before a period and in pregnancy. Now I'm post-menopausal, I get them occasionally if I'm very stressed.

I've been assured by my gp and optician that they're harmless.

And I have heard only intelligent people get migraines Smile

That's nice to know, hormones Grin

It's very odd - especially the not being able to speak thing, that's disconcerting! Evidently yet another of the joys of motherhood ... !

yep - i used to have full on vomiting agony dark room ones, from age 8 to about 26, and since then they've generally been just the visual bit, plus the other effects - queasy, very tired, woozy, slightly out of it - but not much pain, and no photophobia. In fact, i had one today. I'm so blaze about them now, it started while i was paying for my shopping in sainsbos, realised i couldn't see the price on the till. still managed to drive home Blush then bed for 90 mins for a comatose-style nap.

sethstarkaddersmum · 21/08/2010 20:29

yes, me.

the great thing is I have only had ONE in the 6 years since getting pregnant with my first child (used to have them every few months), so for me this has been one of the benefits of motherhood.

LovelyDear · 21/08/2010 20:30

i think i meant blasé.

mrsfred · 21/08/2010 20:37

I get these too. A sudden awareness that I can't see a complete picture then what I call 'arc' lines across my vision for around half an hour.

Sometimes I get a headache but usually not full-blown.

I had one a couple of months ago which was quite severe and came back after an hour or so. I had my eyes checked and the optician said it can sometimes be brought on by a neck problems, which would also be a factor for me.

ThatDamnDog · 21/08/2010 20:43

Do any of you get the speech problems too?

OP posts:
Lynli · 21/08/2010 20:44

I have had these for about a year now. I had full blown agonising migraines before, so I am not complaining.

I have got high blood pressure at the moment, they are getting less as it is improving.

hormonesnomore · 21/08/2010 21:03

ThatDamnDog All my family get them & DD has had the jumbled speech thing when she was pregnant.

Something really really strange has just happened. After not having had a migraine for over a year, I've just had one (probably shouldn't be on the computer, vision just returning now). I would like to know how that happened!!!

ThatDamnDog · 21/08/2010 21:05

LOL! It must be catching!

I had a huge one on Saturday, speech feeling headache the works. I still had a bad head on Tuesday.

However, when I was pregnant with dc2 I had one or two symptoms constantly for about 11 weeks, it would be the vision, or my speech or the headache or joyfully the whole lot. Luckily, they seem to be few and far between since then though.

cositjustisok · 22/08/2010 06:13

I get the Aura but no headache too. Most annoying bit and always worries me..is my inabililty to speak clearly or even get my words out, or even think clearly. Cant seem to get out what I want to say and words come out all jumbled up....even when I try really hard to say the correct sentence it will come out a jumble of nonsense. Mine started in late pregnancy with my second child...think I was about 35 weeks too. My tongue goes very funny..like pins and needles in it and feels swollen Confused and my hearing is so sharp..think I could hear grass grow...no clue what these last 2 are about and docs just ignore them symptoms, think that means the either dont think its a worry or dont believe it happens me..but my hearing gets so sharp I ask the kids to whisper{grin] has it benefits I spose.

trumpton · 22/08/2010 06:35

Yes ThatDamnDog I get poor speech and slur my words. Balance is bad too and I throw up( a lot ). Quite embarassing as I look and sound drunk.
Pain for the last couple has been horrendous but have new meds to try so am hoping for the best.

mountainmonkey · 22/08/2010 06:49

I get occular migraines too. Its usally like a floating blob in front of my eyes. Eating something usually helps- I think its down to low blood sugar.
