Sore, painful finger joints. what will help?

My fingers are very stiff, painful, slightly swollen, bit hot. I can't bend them back as far as i used to, there is less flexibility in them, also applies to my wrists, but not as bad, and that comes and goes.

It has started since DS2 was born, think not helped by the way i hold him at night when he feeds - i lock my fingers together to stop him falling should i fall asleep while he feeds. Now he is heavier, i guess its putting pressure on them?

Anyway, is there anything I can do/remedies I can take to make them feel better.

This, along with my extensive grey hair and new wrinkles is making me feel old.

You're not old.

Have you been to see your GP?

Astrophe · 14/08/2010 13:36

How old is your DS2? I had this after DD2 was born, and it lasted until she was about 9 or 10 months. I spoke to my GP and she said it's common for menopausal women to get joint pain due to hormone changes, and so quite likely that my pain was also due to hormonal changes.

I found a soak in warm water helped short term, and now it has stopped altogether (DD is 12 months).

I agree you should see your GP. Are you breastfeeding? If not, or if GP endorses safety, you could try glucosemine supplements.

Do you have psoriasis? It is associated with early onset arthritis.

PavlovtheCat · 14/08/2010 16:20

oh good to hear itis probably/possibly breastfeeding related. typing one handed right now, so will post properly later, thanks for the advice x

ok, sorry for the quick post earlier, DS was feeding!

Thinking about it, it does ring bells last time, having sore wrists etc, but not as bad. I have gone through the sore joints already this time, had stiff ankles and wrists when ds was about 3 months or so, put that down to all the hormones from pg (elastin?) disappearing, but this is getting worse.

I worry i guess as my mother had arthritis from relatively young, as did her mother, but not sure if that would necessarily mean I did.

I used to click my knuckles, drove people mad, and everyone used to tell me it would cause arthritis if i continued, and i was like yeah sure, fingers were very nimble and slender, and clicked easily. I have now realised when recalling that, that I have also not actually clicked, or needed to click them for a while. I can't remember when that stopped! (but not very long ago, probably around DD being born?).

Fish oil (much better than cod liver) is great for joints.

PavlovtheCat · 15/08/2010 18:31

Moos where can I buy fish oil? or do you mean as in eating more fish? I eat oily fish once a month, so not enough.

Pavlov
Any good health shop will sell you fish oil. Go to a good one (not Holland & Barratts!) and get advice from them.

Thanks mooos

Also heard that Devils Claw works brilliant. You should be able to get it at any good health food shop. Have been recommended the tincture/tablets by A. Vogel.

It would be wise to check your GP if you're taking any other medication which might react with it.

ChilledChick2 · 17/08/2010 21:29

I almost forgot, Jan de Vries is another name to look out for regarding natural remedies.

Hope you get it sorted.

Pandsbear · 17/08/2010 21:47

I would say if it is getting worse please go and see yr Doc. She/he will then be able to rule out arthritis/advise on other supplements.
