Has anyone ever had a cyst in their eardrum?

I have been having trouble hearing in my left ear, basically I can't! After going to the doctors and being referred to the hospital it appears I have a cyst in my eardrum. The consult tried to use the suction machine to suck it out but it was painful, so sent me away with eardrops to use for 2 weeks and a nasal spray to use for a month and an appointment to return in 6 weeks.

It's been 3 weeks since my appointment and i've used the ear drops and nasal spray but with no obvious improvement.

I just wondered if anyone else has ever had this and if they have did it get sorted out in the end and could you hear again?

I really want to get this sorted. It's no fun not being able to hear

bump for you.

is it otitis externa type thing? my ear completely closed up, it took two types of oral anti-b's for the swelling to go down.

i had an allergic reaction to the spray as well. totally rubbish.

no nickoftime, it's a build up of keratin apparently, but consultant told me it was a cyst

Next appointment is 7th SeptSad

Did they say what sort out cyst it is?

Eddas · 15/08/2010 09:14

I got a copy of a letter the consultant sent my doctor, it just said a build up of keratin. Whatever that means!!

I had sort of cysts on my ear drums after jamming in ear plugs to try and sleep after a night shift. I sort of jammed them in so hard that the vacuum that I created separated the layers of the ear drum. It sounded like my ears were full of fluid. Wasn't an infection though and it just cleared up on its own.
Keratin is just old skin cells, your ear drum is constantly replacing itself and grows from the middle out I think. Then the old cells fall away and make up the white flakey stuff that comes out of your ears if you stick your finger in.

I'm wondering if the stuff they've given you isn't to shrink it but soften it up. Keratin is really tough, it's what your nails are made of afterall.
When you go back it may have softened sufficiently for them to remove it - this is supposition of course but that may be why you haven't had any improvement because that might not be what spray etc is for IYSWIM?

BelaLugosiNoir · 15/08/2010 13:47

Keratin can build up and form 'horns' as well. I used to work in a histology lab and we'd regularly get horns removed from fingers, ears etc some were as big as 3cm long. Jolly tough too, had to be put in a special solution to soften them up so they could be cut up and examined microscopically.

ooo all good info, thank you. Yes I think the ear drops were to soften the keratin so hopefully when I go back they can suction it out. Thought it was weird to give me 2 weeks worth of drops and then 4 weeks after they finish I go back for the suctioningHmm Presumably he knows what he's talking about though, unlike me!

It's annoying me when I sleep now, which I take as a good sign. It's hard to explain but my ear makes noises but it didn't before so it might be the ear trying to clear itselfHmm or I may be talking rubbishGrin
