i only have a chin length bob but for the last few weeks my hair has been shedding like mad, ie i am noticing more in my brush and when i wash it theres quite a bit in the plughole and when i comb it through.

i had a baby 14 months ago which i know can cause some hair loss, but i already had that shedding phase when my baby was about 6 months (and it wasnt even as bad as this)

it isnt noticeable YET as i have thick hair but i am scared that it will start to become noticeable if it carries on much longer.

please ladies, any advice? :(

How long has it been happening to you for SWC? I hope you get yours sorted soon too.

Hope someone comes along with some advice! I feel silly posting this on here as I am sure people come on here with much worse problems. but I am only 30 and I quite like my hair, I don't want to lose it :)

Hi My hair started to fall out at when I was about 12 or 13. I went to the Dr and he gave me some steroid based cream stuff and some shampoo. It soon cleared up, I would go to see the Dr.

chocolatefroggie · 11/08/2010 15:36

Hi this happened to me when dd was 14 months old, I was really worried, and I blocked all the plug holes at home and on hols Grin
I went and saw the dr and they didn't really know what it was but after about 6 weeks it stopped and I was fine I actually didn't feel like I had any less hair.
Dr said afterwards it could have been stress, I had a traumatic birth exp and was still finding it tough, but honestly it really was fine just one of those weird post pregnancy things i think Smile

Katisha · 11/08/2010 15:41

Mine has been falling out for weeks actually. I also have thick hair so am not worried - it's just a PITA having to clear up the hair from around the house. I am assuming it's some sort of summer moult!

cocopear · 11/08/2010 16:12

Thanks for the replies :)

perhaps I might go and bother my doctor! he is rubbish though.... Hmm

Can't you request which Dr you see? We can

Elsa123 · 11/08/2010 16:54

This happened to my sister at the same stage when she'd had her DD. She had an over active thyroid. Very common post childbirth- worth a talk with your GP for some tests.

cocopear · 11/08/2010 17:04

elsa did she get it sorted out?

Please be reassured that this is normal. Is it your first baby? After my first, and a bit after my second, my hair fell out in heaps and blocked up all the plugs and brushes and everything. Then it stopped - the regrowth was awful - I looked like a fuzzy baby bird!

Your body is in 'grow' mode when you have a baby and it often goes overboard adjusting first time around. Your hair would have been growing like mad for a couple of years, now it's time to get back to normal. If it fell out at six months, is this because you stopped breast feeding around that time?

I bet you've had great hair lately haven't you? You say it's thick - probably much thicker than before you got pg. You're just not post natal anymore. Don't worry. I was glad to get rid of some of mine as I had heaps of it!

cocopear · 11/08/2010 17:23

No, its my second baby. it happened after both pregnancies, at around 6 month post-birth. which I expected so wasn't freaked out esp as both times it stopped after a few weeks. But my youngest is 14 months old now, it can't happen twice, surely?

it is normal as others have said but this was also one of the symptoms of my underactive thyroid - def worth a blood test at any rate!

stanausauruswrecks · 11/08/2010 20:38

I've had a similar thing - but have had blood tests - all normal. Have seen a dermatologist who has diagnosed alopecia arreata. Like you I have really thick hair, so it's not noticable from the front, but it's nearly all gone from the back of my head Sad
Doc has put it down to stress-DD is a rubbish sleeper, so haven't had a decent kip in over 1.5 years, plus she had a bumpy start to life too.
I was given iron tablets, as my ferritin levels were borderline low, and this can affect strength of any new hair growth.

cocopear · 12/08/2010 16:55

I have heard iron tablets can help as well. and it could be stress for me as well because my baby isnt sleeping either and i am a bit depressed (probably because of this)

It can be due to iron deficiency - Floradix liquid supplement has helped me in the past and I believe it reduced my hair shedding. The only thing is that it is a bit costly.

cocopear · 13/08/2010 11:19

I know someone who took florisene for iron deficiency-related hair loss and apparently they worked for her. again they are quite expensive though....

Mine did this once. Hairdresser recommended PhytoCyane by Phyto.

FunnyLittleFrog · 13/08/2010 11:30

Spatone (similar to Floradix) is often on 3 for 2 from Boots which makes one month's supply only about £5. Works well for me, swear by the stuff as it stopped hair loss and got me back on track energy wise while pg and during the year after giving birth.

Mirrorball · 13/08/2010 11:33

Iron... I used Spatone. My kids are 3 and 4 and my hair is really thin at the front and loads still comes out. causes me a great deal of worry. It's also going grey. How attractive.

Must get some multivitamins and spatone....
