Hypothyroidism

Hi, been sent for blood tests, my symptoms are extreme tiredness, very itchy flaky skin especially on my nose and eyebrows, thinning hair, swollen feet/ankles (currently on 40mg Furosemide) not making much difference, and very achy limbs.

I'm only 41 but feel bloody 90 on most days, and my concentration is absolutely blardy awful.

Does anyone else have hypothyroid and do these symptoms ring any bells? My GP doesn't expect my blood test to show anything!! If it comes back as normal, do I insist on more tests?

TIA

I have hypothyroid SS, and your symptoms sound very familiar, - have you also gained weight for no good reason? I have also felt depressed, and been very sensitive to noise. My concentration also became very poor - I couldn't read a book or watch TV etc.

I'm not sure what to do if your blood tests come back normal, because my first lot didn't but, yes if you are still feeling awful I would insist on more tests.

(I am on thyroxin, and my blood results are now supposedly normal, but I still don't feel quite right, although a lot better - so I may be asking for more extensive tests soon)

hello, i have hypothyroid. Diagnosed last year a few month after the birth of dd. I felt incredibly tired - more than just new mum tiredness i felt totally shattered. Hair falling out a lot. Apparently can often start following pregnancy. Or other hormonal changes i think. Now i take Levothyroxine 50mg a day and feel a lot better. HTH. If your result shows this is not the problem then are your iron levels ok? Good luck.

Yes me too, diagnosed at 39, extreme tiredness, lack of concentration, 'brain fog' which left me dazed and weary, weight gain. I have always had dry skin and hair but it seemed worse. Turned out my blood test level was 28 when it should be under 3!!! Thyroxin was a lifesaver. Good luck. And see a different GP, one who is more curious and sympathetic. Keep us posted.

Thanks for all your reply's, Kuri yes I've put on more than 3 stone in weight, not eating anymore than usual, but also now doing more physical work, so I was hoping to lose some weight not put it on.

I'll let you all know the results, thanks again

I've been hypothyroid since I was 18 and had many of the symptoms you describe. They sound like classic hypothyroid symptoms.

I'd insist on knowing the TSH levels because normal spans a wide range and there's a lot of debate about what level treatment could start. So if you're just in the normal range but have low levels, I'd ask to start on thyroxin as you're symptomatic. Or ask to be referred to an endocrinologist.

Good luck!

Yes I have an underactive Thyroid and had the same symptoms

One thing to mention and see that you get it, is that thyroxin is free

They never tell you this but you should ensure the GP sends of the form for you to have a medical exemption card , takes a while but ensure you get a receipt for any prescription charges and claim back when yyou get your card, the card also allows you to have any prescriptions free not just Thyroxin
