I'm sorry if that sounded brusque but it's a touchy subject for me and I'm using DH's laptop and I'm not used to it. Whatever it was, I wish I;d known about it years ago when my mum had cancer, it was her brithday on the 4th August and even though she died in 1986, it still hurts how she died in agony. Sad

stickyj - i'm sorry, it must have been a very hard program foe you to watch tonight. I'm so very sorry about your Mum.

blametheparents · 07/08/2010 22:24

It's a tv programme, doubt it was that factual.
I guess we might all one day think, if it only it were that easy Sad

stickyj · 07/08/2010 22:29

Actually Casualty is usually really well researched and knows how important it is to use facts correctly. I just wish that I'd known what they know, maybe things have changed now. To be frank, the night that she dies I listened to her breathing and just wished her to go.I would have given her the stuff myslef but I was only 26 and knew that it would be illegal. I think I know that the doctor that saw her at 10pm gave her an O/d and that when we woke up at 3am, she was gone. I would have liked to hold her hand and be with her.

I'm not sating it is completely unfactual, just that they do gloss over stuff sometimes, and I think this prob one of those occasions.

stickyj · 07/08/2010 22:41

I am sorry but I think that if there were a way to die that quickly aand reasonably painlessly it should be available to everyone who needs it and Casualty should be ready to explain it further.

Sorry. Have had a couple of really difficult weeks with my dad and just got a little incensed that they made it look so normal and easy, especially when there's court cases about it now and everyone has to tread on eggshells if they even consideer it for themselves or a loved one. Sad

OP, this sounds like it really touched some nerves for you and I am really sorry Sad.

I personally don't think that Casualty is either well researched or presented, obviously going for dramatic effect over accuracy and detail. (I once saw an episode where a woman was given a CS without consent and despite shouting "NO NO NO!!" and was told, on complaining, that this was perfectly acceptable because it was a good outcome Hmm.

Why don't you e-mail the BBC and ask for more info? I am really sorry this has upset you.

PavlovtheCat · 08/08/2010 07:42

I was a bit Hmm at how 'easy' they made it seem to help someone die. Like all you have to do is get some drugs from somewhere (as a nurse, they would know where wouldn't they?) set up a video to say it was done in sound knowledge and not administer it yourself. This is the UK. Not switzerland.

I expect we will see further repurcussions from this in later series, but I think they should have emphasised that regardless of how it was done, it is not simple to do, it is still illegal and there are likely to be consequences, especially. They made it seem like because they put these measures in place, it was ok legally to do.

sitckyj i am sorry for your loss. My mum passed away painfully from cancer 3 years ago. I feel the pain you are going through. I wish I could have helped her too. If I had been able to, I would have done it without question.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2010 08:49

You are right Pavlov. It seemed more like an instructional video.
I woke up feeling very sad about it this morning.

snowmash · 08/08/2010 13:17

Ofcom has rules against showing suicide methods unles absolutely justified.

Sorry for everyone feeling bad.

purplepeony · 08/08/2010 13:52

I saw a prog on Dignitas right up to the point of someone dying, and if I remember correctly, it was very quick- a few seconds?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2010 21:07

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion tbh.

stickyj, I hope it feels less raw for you today.
