green poo with streaks of blood - I'm panicking!

About 10 days ago my exclusively breastfed 8 wk old dd had a greenish poo with a streak of mucousy blood in it. I took her to the GP who put it down to - what else - a virus. She didn't seem to have any other symptoms tho and her subsequent nappies were fine. She has since had poos ranging from bright yellow to lime green - but no blood. Tonight she has had a lime green "stringy" poo with more spots of mucousy blood and I am beginning to worry. She has never been constipated as such, but does seem to have windy "explosive" poos and strains a little when she does them (which is almost always when she is on the breast) My questions are - and i feel a little foolish - is this normal? How can you tell when a breastfed baby has diarrohea if the poos are liquid/soft anyway? What does green poo signify?

Mine often had green poo, and I never worried about it. Since reading other people's fears on mumsnet, I feel a bit Bad Mummy.

Small amounts of blood is also probably nothing to worry about, but I'd take her for a checkup anyway if it was my baby and it didnt stop within a day, or if she had other symptoms like fever.

Some babies look as though they are straining when they are pooing, and some dont, and I dont know why.

think you will know when she's got diarrohea though - there will be so much more liquid .

I would take her for another check up, she will probably be fine but it's worth finding out for peace of mind.

I would take her back for a check up.
Talk to midwife/health visitor too

Mine has had green poo and it tended to be when he was getting too much foremilk. I was feeding him in frequent but brief bursts because of sore nipples. He also had explosive poos from a build up of wind. The blood may just have been a damaged blood vessel from the force of pooing...
I think my ds had a bout of diahrrea (too late to even attempt correct spelling) following a dodgy curry (me not him) that irritated his tummy. His poo was more runny than normal but smelt very different and disctinctively sour.

this sounds very much like my ds's poo when he had gastric problems. the doc initially said it was a virus but when it persisted he was referred to a gastroenterologist. I was initially advised to give up dairy in my diet, [exclusivley breastfed at time] and then gluten, and then other things too, but the symptoms never really went until we put him on neocate, altho i still breastfeed too. Try giving up dairy, that is often the most common trigger. If the blood is mucousy and not bright red it is more likely a colitis or food allergy than straining.

Our 5mo DS had red mucus streaks in otherwise normal mustard poo (exclusively breastfed). Not every nappy, and varies from 3-4 streaks to 1 tiny speck.

Having read this thread and other stuff on the net, we are going to keep monitoring and try eliminating dairy.

we are concerned that if he cries when teething, we may confuse the cries with somehing more serious.

But having gone to the paediatrician, who told us to see a GP, who in turn was surprised why the paediatrician did not deal with it, and told us to go to casualty instead, we have concluded, that they don't really know and so we shall keep monitoring.

Any advice or thoughts are welcome.
