Verrucas blossoming like wild flowers. Will NOTHING stop them?

DD has loads of verrucas on both feet. We've tried bazuka and also the smoking-acid-burny thing from the chemist to no avail.

The doc says the age limit for her to have treatment at the verruca clinic is 12. (She's 11). He says we can have an appointment but it's not for two months.

The chiropodist says it'll take several treatments over the course of a couple of months and may be unsuccessful at the end.

We've also been told they go on their own eventually but she has had them for about 3 years now and they're mushrooming!

DD wants them gone. Now. Or at least before she begins secondary.

Any experience to share?

duct tape - search the archives

DD had three large ones at the bottom of one foot. She was prescribed sylic acid, I used it on her everydau for about a month and it did eventally get rid of them. A couple of new ones cropped up during the treatment but went quickly with the sylic acid.

I know this might sound a bit way out there but have you tried banana skins?

Here is some info I found on the web. I know one of my friends tried it and found it bizarrely successful!

A treatment that was found to be helpful in a research project (published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 1981), involved the use of banana skin. The inner side of a fresh piece of banana skin is placed over the wart and held in place with tape. This is changed daily after washing the affected area. As with other treatments, you should rub down the area regularly with a pumice stone or an emery board.

All worth a go. Trouble is, they are caused by a virus. I had giant wart on my knee for over a year. Last summer, I got fed up and burnt it off, successfully. Within a month, another had appeared on my face. So I had that lasered off but the consultant did say that because it was a virus it would undoubtedly pop up elsewhere. Sure enough, I now have them on my hands and again on my knee. Fortunately they are still small so I'm going to leave them for the moment in the hope that they disappear, as they apparently eventually will. It is very frustrating for your DD, though. When you're as old as me, you're not as self-conscious as a pre-teen.

OK another three different things to try.

What's duct tape btw? Is it the same as gaffer tape?

DD when 12 had a cluster of 6- doctor gave a sharp intake of breath (a bit like builders do when giving you a quote) and said it would be at least 3 treatments to freeze them and would be VERY VERY painful.
It took one, and dd didn't flinch.
So hang in there.

Def Duct tape.

The following is cut n pated from Patient.co.uk
Tape
One research study (cited at the end) found that covering a wart with strong adhesive tape seemed to give a good chance of clearing warts within a month or two. (Duct tape was used in the study.) In this study, about 7 in 10 warts had cleared within 2 months with using duct tape. The method described in the study was:.

?The wart was covered with duct tape for 6 days. If the tape fell off during this time, a fresh piece of tape was put on.
?After 6 days, the tape was removed and the wart soaked in warm water for 5 minutes. After drying, it was then gently rubbed with an emery board or pumice stone to get rid of dead tissue from the top of the wart.
?The wart was then left uncovered overnight and duct tape put on again the next day.
?Treatment was continued for up to two months. (Note: most warts that cleared with duct tape did so within 28 days.)
However, 2 subsequent studies using tape (cited at the end) failed to demonstrate the good response of the first study. So, the evidence for 'tape treatment' is mixed. But, it may be worth a try as you are unlikely to do any harm and it may work. Some experts advise that you should not use duct tape on the face as in some people it can irritate the skin.

OK but what is duct tape? Is it the same as gaffer?

Yes, hope someone can clarify about the tape. I have some "duck tape" which I thought was a type of duct tape - so I tried to apply it to DS's verruca (freezing and other treatments having got us nowhere) - but it doesn't stick at all to his foot so I think maybe I've got the wrong kind of tape???

BellevilleRendezvous · 03/08/2010 21:30

soak feet in bowls of warm salty water every night (til water is going cold) for a week (maybe more, can't quite remember details sorry) - worked for me aged 12 with very persistent ones.

Milliways · 03/08/2010 22:07

Yep - also known as Gaffer tape here and branded as Duck tape !

Hope you sort the Verrucas soon

beautifulgirls · 03/08/2010 22:36

Has she had her immunity checked thoroughly? There was a girl featured on embarrasing bodies on channel 4 with some very resistant verrucas, multiple both feet and in her particular case there was an underlying immune problem that prevented her body from dealing with them at all. I'm not saying this is what your daughter has but certainly for that girl it was important that they got to the root of the problem.

MajesticScallop · 04/08/2010 12:30

Thanks for the links Milliways. Definitely got the right kind of tape then - DS must just have the wrong kind of feet. Not sure what to do about that!!

lunarlotus · 04/08/2010 16:00

The banana skin thing works really well, tape a piece to the sole of foot as brigit says. It takes a few days to work but has the advantage of being quite comfortable!

2kids2dogsandahorse · 04/08/2010 20:57

We got rid of DD1s mahoosive verucca with cider vinegar. Soaked a tissue in it and wrapped it round her toe (it covered almost the whole of her little toe) then taped it on. Verucca was gone within a month

summer111 · 05/08/2010 19:57

ds had a number on both feet and we dutifully applied bazuka every day or when I remembered for a few months...with not much change. I got fed up with this regime as he hated having the top skin pulled off; so I decided to let them be. A few months later, he announced that a miracle had happenend as his feet are now totally clear!
Woohoo!!!
