My bil had sudden rectal bleeding (fresh blood), to the extent he collapsed and was taken to hospital. There he's had a negative gastroscopy (as expected), an 'inconclusive' colonoscopy -and a nuclear med scan (apparently; all second hand info!).

Why the latter? To look for a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum? Can you label to look for anything else other than a Meckel's in the case of presumably colonic haemorrhage?

TIA!

Theres several investigations they can do that might be appropriate - sometimes it's a red cell labelled study to look for bleeding so that the site can be found, sometimes a inflammation marker looking for colitis, or the Meckels.

I think the labelled red cells is the standard of care when bleeding can't be located on colonoscopy

Thanks!

I'd imagine the colonoscopy was 'inconclusive' either due to ongoing bleeding or inadequate prep. I did think NM scanning for a Meckel's was a bit premature (2 or 3 days post emergency admission)- I thought they might do that when ALL other possibilities have drawn a blank!
