Contraceptive Crisis- help

Just been refused COCP after 13 years due to high blood pressure. Considering going to GP for second opinion. BP probably caused by severe stresss over last few years as I am a slim non smoker. Choices are POP (Cerazette) Implanon or Mirena. My concerns are near 100% reliability, plus I need either no or light bleeding due to a fairly extreme sport. Could cope with spotting but not heavy bleeding. My other concern is that I have not had children and tend to faint after physical trauma so worried about Mirena insertion. Does anyone know the best choice for no/light bleeding? The nurses seemed to think c 2/3 chance of this outcome on any of the options? Many thanks!

I am on cerazette and have had no periods for 2 years. At least if you try the mini-pill (p.s. there are other types of mini-pill other than cerazette so if it doesnt suit you could try a different one) you can stop it quickly if it doesnt suit whereas it is harder to get implanon or the mirena removed.

Thanks for the thoughts. My concerns about Cerazette are that it isn't so effective as the long acting methods and that a lot of people seem to get irregular bleeding. Also it would be good to get a semi permanent solution... thanks again.

Mirena, although you need to keep it in for 6 months at least to give it a chance esp for any bleeding to settle.

trainsetter · 03/08/2010 17:41

How permanent do you want it to be?

Earthdog · 03/08/2010 19:21

LittleCheesy, that is a worry as the sport I do starts in Sept/Oct., so I will have problems if Mirena doesn't settle for 6 months...might be tempted to have it inserted in the Spring instead so it can settle 'out of season' as it were.. trainsetter, I definitely never want any children, so permanent/semi permanent is fine, but I am also happy taking a daily pill as I never forget..oh also I am age 40 so not sure if that would effect the chances of getting a light or no bleed? Unfortunately I fear I may still be fertile as my Mother had her children in her late 30s.

Why not have a hysterectomy then?

Earthdog · 03/08/2010 19:53

OMG trainsetter that is rather drastic isn't it???! Don't hysterectomies cause some long term problems??

OP posts:
trainsetter · 03/08/2010 20:06

Well it is but you said it was a "crisis" so just an idea.

Flighttattendant · 03/08/2010 20:18

AFAIK hysterectomy is not an easy option compared to the others - there can be a great deal of issues which arise from the lack of certain hormones.

I really wouldn't recommend it unless necessary.

Earthdog - sorry not to be much help but I hope you sort it out.

trainsetter · 03/08/2010 20:52

I know it isn't an easy option, I was only trying to help but have no real idea tbh.

Earthdog · 03/08/2010 20:56

Yes good point trainsetter, it would certainly solve all the problems and I would not rule it out if other options fail, but am loathe to have major surgery as a first choice & risk messing things up when I am basically healthy. Thanks Flightattendant, I hope I am making a mountain out of a molehill! I expected to be given another 6 months supply anyway during which to make a decision but no!

It must be a bit of a shock to be suddenly without

and if you are used to it, too.

I wonder if there is any way to get your BP down enough - but that might be a long term thing rather than quick fix.

Sidge · 03/08/2010 21:02

Implanon?
Depo-provera?
Any POP, eg Micronor or Cerazette?

If you get any bleeding initially you can always take some norethisterone to control it until it settles.

Otherwise if you are adamant you won't want children then can your partner be sterilised?

Sidge · 03/08/2010 21:03

Meant to type 'you or your partner could be sterilised.'

Earthdog · 03/08/2010 21:57

Sidge, I am liking the look of Implanon. Seems less scary/invasive than Mirena somehow, though I would be brave if the Mirena was going to do a better job long term. Depo concerns me re; the bone density issue due to my age. I have booked an appointment for either coil or implant next month so my options are open, or I can take Cerazette and cancel the appointment. DP immediately offered to get the snip, bless him but I am worried about it going wrong for him and it would presumably mean I go back to the heavy AF I had before I went on the pill, which would be no good for my sport either- sigh! Thanks again for being so helpful everyone in my hour of need, it feels more like a solvable problem now, not a crisis! Oh and I will look into reducing the BP Flight, but I don't do anything unhealthy anyway really...I do wonder if it is just white coat/dashing to appointment hypertension :-/

PS thanks for suggesting the Norethisterone, I will look into that too..
