Gilbert's syndrome

I've been diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome after a long spell (about 6 yrs) of feeling nauseous, vomiting and real tiredness. Does anyone know anything about Gilbert's syndrome? Anyone got it and know how to manage it? All I have is some anti-sickness tablets from the docs. Thanks

DH has it. I'll ask him to pop by when he's back. His seems pretty mild and is manifested by turning distinctly yellow if he eats too much junk food and fatty stuff. He basically just trys to avoids the triggers - fat / chocolate.

A friend of mine has it, she has to limit her alcohol intake or she gets jaundiced.

This may be a decent start.

Thanks for your replies. Does anyone have the nausea that I have? I've cut out alcohol and only have a glass on the odd occasion, I've cut out chocolate (my main vice as I love it) and I'm careful about how much fat I eat and on the whole I feel much better, as expected I guess. However as soon as I return to eating just a little more fat I get the nausea and sickness again. Does this sound normal? Gilbert's was diagnosed after a blood test showed raised bilirubin levels. This has only started since having my first child.

Have a look at the British Liver trust Website - they provide good patient support and info.

Also phone your consultant's secretary and ask if there is a liver (or gastroenterology) specialist nurse that you could have the contact details for and then ring her (him) and ask if you could see them for some advice as you are struggling a bit.

Sorry to hear you are having a rough time of it.

Fil had it - ds1 just been tested. (interesting what you say about the vomiting as he had that).

DH has it. Was told by the GP it wasn't a problem but he could note down triggers to avoid. He looks yellow when under the weather and does have certain trigger foods (that also trigger migraines) but largely he does nothing about it.

He does suffer with stomach problems and nausea though. He's so used to it he just ignores it.

Thank you so much for your messages, it's so nice to hear from you because it makes me feel relatively normal! Btw the British Liver Trust website is brill and has some really useful links, thank you

Hi, I was just diagnosed with this a couple of weeks ago. Went to the doc with persistant throat infections/tiredness/stomach bugs/achy joints etc and this turned up. When my GP looked back my results it appears that Ive had this lurking since DD was born (she's 3 now).

I have days when I tell my DH I feel yellow....that is, my symptoms have flared up, my eyes go a bit yellow and I feel rubbish. And then it goes again. I've yet to find a trigger for it however.

To be honest, it doesn't bother me much as when I feel rubbish I know it will pass.....

How comforting to hear that yours started after your DD was born because mine started after my first DS was born. I wonder if it"s hormone related. Thank you so much for your help.
