Help - new contraception needed

buttonmoon78 · 28/07/2010 19:32

I'm currently using the Mirena but I'm really not happy with the constant spotting. In the past I've tried oral contraceptives (despite me telling dr I fell pg while on it I was told it would be fine, then I fell pg again - doh). I got on really well with the depo injections but cannot use them anymore as I've used them for the maximum amount of time.

DH won't consider the snip (and I don't want this to turn into a rant about how insensitive and selfish he is so please don't say that!) so I've been considering it for me but I'm not yet 100% sure TBH.

No is he all that chuffed with condoms. Does anyone have any experience with the cap / diaphragm?

No personal experience, but I wouldn't use them as not effective enough. Did you get pg on POP or COC pills? Combined are obviously more effective. Have you tried non hormonal coil or the implant? The latter likely to cause same problem as Mirena but you never know..

BMoon i have used the diaphragm years ago and it was ok but it had a high failure rate. i probably used it for a year or more but wouldnt recommend it.

whats wrong with condoms?

DH is what's wrong with condoms!

Good news though. Went to dr this morning and he said that there is no longer a maximum time re depo injection. Yay! So am going to get my Mirena removed after my holiday and go back on the injection.

What's the maximum time for Depo (if you don't mind me asking)?

buttonmoon78 · 30/07/2010 00:20

It used to be 4 years as there was a study which suggested that bone density reduced after that time.

GP said today that no longer applies esp if you are under 50. Your bone density will renew within 12 months if you have no predisposing factors so he suggested (not medical fact, simply his opinion) that if I was at all worried, I could use it for 4-5 years then take a year off.

glad you able to get what you wanted. i considered the implant a while ago but decided it wasnt for me.
can i ask if you still need to have the injections every 12 weeks?

I used the diaphragm a few years ago, no accidents (and I conceived easily) without it. I found it ok, it's a bit messy and disrupts the flow a bit.

I now use the copper coil and have no spotting. If you can cope with heavier periods for the first few months then it could be for you (they last 10 years).

  • that should be (and I conceived easily without it)!
