Nearly 7yr old still has cradle cap. What's this all about? Any help appreciated.

My nearly 7yr old has had cradle cap ever since she was a baby and it has never gone away.

Of course, she has a full head of hair now so it's really not noticeable at all in every day life, but when you lift her hair up you can still see lots of thick flaky patches.

I use Dentinox Cradle Cap shampoo on it which works pretty well and just about keeps it under control (although it never goes completely).

Whenever I try out a different shampoo or have not washed her hair for a while, she gets a bad flare up of the cradle cap.

Any advice? Should we go to docs?

My almost 9yo still has it too. Worst when the central heating is on. We use a Rausch Willowbark shampoo

Olive oil or try head and shoulders or ask dr. sometimes the give coal tar shampoo its stinks but works

I was advised (on mn several years ago) that lots of brushing improved the circulation to the scapt and reduces CC. No idea if the science of this is correct, but for my boys it definitely works. Their CC is much worse when I don't bruch very much.

DD has it too although she's only 2.6. She has a bit of a widow's peak which means that her hairline is slight receeded where her parting is and it's very visible there.

EverythingsRosie · 28/07/2010 12:18

The problem with all the oil based ideas like olive oil etc... is that she is no baby anymore.

She has long, thick hair and I have found that trying to wash any type of oil out of it is worse than dealing with the cradle cap in the first place IYSWIM!!

Unless anyone has any good ideas for getting olive oil out of long hair?!?!?

my dd is 6 and has it too. she also has a widows peak, and only really has the cradle cap in the 'bald' patches (shes not really bald, but yswim!)/. I have alwys though that because those bald patches only have very fine hair, they don't really get brushed, and so the cradle cap develops there.

We also use olive oil and comb it out, maybe one a month or so.

dandruf shampoo is good for getting the oil out, but only put it near the scalp - I don't find it too bad to wash out, though I do two washes in a row.

Astrophe · 28/07/2010 12:23

i mean only put the oil near the scalp, not the shampoo! and then wash, rinse, and wash again.

I would talk to your doctor. There are good scalp treaments for dermatitis/eczema, for example, that are in a spirit solution.... you squirt the treatment through the hair onto the scalp, the spirit part evaporates and you're left with the medication in position.

I used to successfully treat my son's cradle cap with Savlon. You have to part the hair in sections and apply it directly to the scalp. Rubbed gently into the scalp the night before, it was medicated and emollient without being disgustingly greasy like olive oil. The next day the flakes could be combed out and rinsed out with water. That's another option.

Good luck

Vosene seems to help for us + nit combing.Snake oil from lush helps too, but it really is a pain to put on; it washes out ok though.

Nothing gets rid of it completely. It's of some comfort to me that my DS(11) is now cradle cap free; he just seemed to grow out of it.

Luckily my DD doesn't seem too bothered by hers.

Sorry if this sounds weird and impractical - but what worked for my dc was getting sand in hair ( accidentally ).
Washed and nit combed it out and hey presto no cradle cap .
But like I say ,possibly not very practical for a 7 year old .

This may be a fungal infection. Your GP should be able to help or alternatively buy Nizoral shampoo. Certainly go to your doc if that doesn't help.
