Fluttering noise inside ear. What is it?

I have always got a fluttering noise inside my ears. Now and then I notice it, like if I am trying to get to sleep. I think I have had it for years.

Have it tonight quite loud in left ear.

Is there any treatment for it?

Its like fluttering but like a base drum.

It could be congestion. If there is any fluid/mucus in the ear/nose passages caused by a cold or hayfever, for example, this can lead to pressure and various internal sounds being more audible. If there's a regular rhythm to the 'fluttering' then it can be your own pulse you're hearing. It can be quite normal... if anyone sits very, very quietly (such as at night before going to sleep) and concentrates, chances are they will hear something that the usual sounds of daytime mask. 'Tinnitus' is the medical name for hearing noises. There is no treatment, as such. Sufferers are instead encouraged not to focus on the internal noises... Listen to very quiet music at night, for example.

It could be tensor tympani myoclonus.

I have this OnEdge - I think it's what Honestybox said

I have it too - drives me nuts when trying to go to sleep. I bought a pillow with a small speaker inside to plug my iPod into (www.iwoot.com, I think), and it's good, but my DH complains he can hear the music because of the volume I have to have it at when the noises are at their loudest (about once a week)

a nervous twitch, or earwax methinks........

I managed to get rid of it in the end. I kind of pressed my finger in, and created a vacum and then kind of pulled back causing suction to my inner ear. The noise stopped immedialtely.

Don't knoww what causes it but pleased I have found a solution.

If you can get rid of it the way you describe then it is most likely a build up of pressure in the ear. You may wish to consider seeing a doctor and have your ears examined for a build-up of wax.
