Does diastasis ever go away

ds2 is now 3 1/2. I did have a four finger separation. Got it down to one with lots of physio. Got a chest infection, coughed and coughed, and now have a four finger gap and pain again. This is not the first time I've undone all my good work.

Does this ever stop happening? Or am I destined to have a swollen tummy, aching pelvis, and hanging feeling for the rest of my life? I'm only 29 and feel like I have been pregnant for years. Still at least I am getting good use out of my old maternity and baggy tops

I don't know but I do hope so. I had twins and that caused a big separation and a hernia (which I knew I had as it went all lumpy under my tummy button). Hernia has just been repaired but my surgeon said that it didn't really matter about the separation (well, it doesn't matter to him!). I am hoping that losing some weight may help mine close up a bit now that the hernia has been stitched....

Hi LargeLatte,

I too have diastisis. My was a massive 7 fingers. And as I had am Em CS the surgeon had knitted the muscles back together to just under my belly button so that the massive gap above hung out over the rest like a shelf.

Must say it got me down a lot and I've found it difficult.

DD is now 12 months and for the last 3 months I've been having physio to sort out other pelvic issues such as the instability in my SI hip joints at the back. The physio has made a massive difference to the diastisis and am now about 1 finger which is probably as good as it will get without serious efforts in the future.

I also used a book by Julie Tupler (called Tupler method) which concentrates on pulling the seperation together.

It really helped too and closed around 3 fingers of seperation for me before I saw the physio for my other issues.

The answer is that your sepereation can get better in fact fully better but you must do some special exercises (no sit ups ever!!!!).

Coughing is apparently bad and can pull a seperation further apart again (apparently you're meant to hold your tummy when you cough).

If you're also having pain in the tummy area and pelvic pain, I'd go to the GP and ask to have it checked out (by a physio not a GP - mine missed a 7 finger seperation... ).

If you're having pelvic pain, you should think about some pelvic floor exercises. They've made the world of difference to me and my pelvic pain and helping the tummy muscles.

I know its easy to say "just do some exercises". I've found it hard to stick with it at times but try and get someone (like your DH/DP, best friend, us MNers) to support you so that when you feel like giving you, you can get a lift from those sources and energy to keep going with it.

Waves to Skandi1
Hello I too am a Julie Tupler method Mum, my story is very similar to Skandi1's. I also had a large 8 finger gap and using the tupler method I have almost closed the gap. If you look on her website www.maternalfitness.com/diastasis.html
Watch the video on here and you can see her doing the exercises at the end. I bought her book and found it helpful too - it mentions other things such as never sitting bolt upright - you must always roll out of bed. This website shows you some of her techniques here www.fitpregnancy.com/general/40871562.html?page=1. Good Luck it does work and in all honesty it is easier than sit ups (which we can't do anymore) and my tummy is definitely shrinking, I also have a bit of weight to lose and 5 months post partum still look quite pregnant, although I am living in hope of the flatter tummy soon xxx

Waving to Indigobarbie,

Wow - well done on closing your gap - you've worked really hard! And you're only 5months PP. I'm now 12 months.....

Glad to hear you're doing so well.

Also still have a bit of a tummy but not due to diastisis but being fat. I can report that I don't look pregnant anymore and people no longer give up their seats on the tube for me. However I look a bit tubby around the middle.

But according to my GP, tummy fat is the easiest to lose - GP is male.....

Am starting another round of juice diet to get rid of the last few pounds.

Largelatte, its been easier (much much easier) to close the gap on my diastisis than it has been to lose the baby weight. Am stating that as an encouragement...

Its worth working on it as it helps your back and particularly lower back enormously to have a strong front.
