group B strep

My baby was born 3 months ago and all is well (he is being EBF). I went to the GP to get swabs done as I want to get an IUD and they insist on swabs... anyway swab comes back and I have group B strep.

Obviously I know this is a problem in pregnancy, but is it a problem the rest of the time? GP offered me antibiotics but as I have no symptoms I declined them.

Group B strep (GBS) is a bacterium which is a normal part of the vaginal flora.

It is only an issue when pregnant as can be passed to the newborn and cause life threatening infections to the baby.

Don't know why your gp offered you antibiotics as the bacteria in the vagina change all the time.

Hope that helps.

Yes, not a problem the rest of the time AFAIK (unless it is specifically an issue relating to IUD insertion?)

thanks for you help, yes annoyingly forgot to ask if its a problem for IUD insertion. will call and ask.

No, I have this and the doctor said it would only be an issue during childbirth but not a problem at any other time.

Only a problem during pregnancy (only potentially), during brth and for the first 3 months of the baby's life when it can be passed to them. Looks like you've skipped the worry
