No funeral?

I wasn't sure where to post this but wonder if anyone knows the answer as i can't find it anywhere on the net.

I know of someone who claims someone he knew died and had no funeral. It was just left for hospital to deal with the body, the deceased had no family. Is this really possible? I thought everyone had to have some sort of funeral?

"If there are no relatives or friends to arrange a funeral, in England and Wales, the local authority or health authority will arrange a simple funeral. In Northern Ireland, the local Health and Social Services board can do this. The public authority that arranges the funeral will then try to recover the cost from any money left by the person who died."

So yes, everyone gets a funeral but the local authority ones are likely to be brief and impersonal. I did hear that the person in charge of arranging the funeral for the LA may attend as (probably) the only mourner.

I don't imagine that the hospital would take it upon themselves to simply dispose of the body.

So it would just be someone from the LA who attended? how very sad

what about if you leave your body to medical science?

piprabbit · 27/07/2010 00:28

sharbie hope this helps.

Sharbie in Irl they cremate the remains when they are finished and pay for it, the remains are then returned to the family for burial or whatever the final wishes were.
I only know this as we have discussed and researched this so that if we cannot be organ doners we can help research.

yes you can leave your body to medical science BUT once they have finished with it they return it to the next of kin. SOmething my friend did't realise when her dad passed away leaving his body to research/science. They had a memorial service only to be contacted some time later to be told "we've finished with him you can have his remains back" (minus a few bits) to lay to rest.
