Last week she woke up in agony twice during the night - next day took her to the doc and she had brown gunge pouring out of her ear Doc said it was probably viral but gave me antibiotics in case she got much worse over the weekend (this was last Thurs). She has been fine since, not complained of pain, the gunge is still there on and off though, but much paler. Should I start the antibiotics? It is starting to look a bit sore round her ear now from all this weepy stuff.

She isn't in pain though - will it just clear up? The doc said not to wipe it away inside the ear or use drops. I don't want to give her antibiotics unless i have to

The worst is probably over if it is oozing (ie the eardrum has burst.) I wouldn't because like you, I'm not into dishing out antibiotics willynilly.

yes, use the antibiotics.

She wouldn't be in pain, cos the pain stops once it has burst.

Ds1 has had this several times. The agony is before the gunge starts, and once it is out they are right as rain. I once took him to the GP with brown/red gunge pouring down the side of his face. He played around in the waiting room, and then when the doctor asked what was up, he rolled up him sleeve to show the tiniest little scratch (about 1 mm long) on his arm!

I'd use the a/b's too. My nephew had an untreated ear infection that went on to infect the bones and flesh surrounding the ear and he's had to have several nasty operations which has left him with one earhole about twice the size of the other. But thank goodness he seems to be over the worst and has about 80% hearing, a much better outcome than was predicted originally, when he was completely deaf on that side.
