Its back again Which is bad, but its my friends wedding on Friday - I am an usher.

I am so fed up of this shit Am going to go to my Dr and cry and beg for them to be removed.

In the mean time what can I do? I still have antibiotics (got changed on to liquid lastime when it was so severe I couldnt swallow tabs) I know I shouldnt but am going to just take them now, (temp, swollen red tonsils with white spots) if I go to GP they will just give me them anyway as always. May go tomorrow but thats 2 doses can get in today.

Will take para and ibu for wedding, maybe cocod. But am meant to be driving from Glasgow (where wedding is) to loch lomond (reception) Fuck fuck.

Any top tips? Better run now, wedding rehearsals at half 7, but will be back.

Bloody tonisllitis

Diluted hydrogen peroxide - get it from chemist - is about 57p - dilute 1 part to 4 parts water and garg;e - it oxidises the bacteria and you will be right as rain in 24 hours - what fizzes off your tonsils spit out as it smells and tastes what I would expect a mangey foxes arse would but it really does the trick.

I had tonislitus so much that became too used to the antibiotics and they stopped working completely so had to have mine out but this did sort it out whilst I was waiting to have them out - I must say though that I would rather have a 14lb baby naturally than have my tonsils out again - was the worst thing ever!

ReasonableDoubt · 21/07/2010 19:09

Different anti-b's? The only thing that works for me. I have had recurrent tonsilitis for the past few years. It's REALLY important that they give you the RIGHT type of anti-b, so if the one you've got isn't working, go back and get a different type. The right one will make you feel a million times better in about 24-36 hours (although probably still very tired).

I ended up with glandular fever for the best part of the spring and if I get tonsilitis again, I'm having them out, deffo.

I feel your pain.

sneezecake · 21/07/2010 19:10

penicillin is best for tonsillitis, make sure you take the whole course, not just until the symptoms go away.
gargle with aspirin 75mg for pain, but as it is infection It won't go any quicker than the anti-biotics can work.
paracetamol for the temp, 4-6 hourly but not exceeding more than 4 1g doses.
and ask to be referred to ENT for then removing. other than that not sure what else you can do.

OnEdge · 21/07/2010 19:10

Lol a mangey foxes arse

Is that a mediacal term?

tiredandgrouchy · 21/07/2010 19:11

antibiotics. But do go the Dr and have each episode recorded. You need 7 attacks in a year iirc to get them to agree to a tonsillectomy on the nhs. Bastards. Tonsillitus was the bane of my life, until I had such a severe attack I ended up in hospital with suspected quinsey. If this is much worse than your usual bouts, insist that they take a closer look, I was sent away two days in a row before having to call 999 as my tonsils were so large I couldn't breathe and had a nice stay hooked up to steriods and having my throat lanced

tiredandgrouchy · 21/07/2010 19:12

Just remembered, merocaine lozenzes are fab for numbing the pain. They numb practically your whole head

Gay40 · 21/07/2010 19:16

I suffered with tonsilitis constantly as a kid, so they took them out. Now I get pharangytis (sp) all the time instead. Apparently tonsils fight the infection so it doesn't get more serious further down.
Thanks, the NHS in the 1980s.

Anyway, this is what works for me. Hot and weak Ribena, as hot as you can bear without burning yourself, swished down your throat as often as you can be bothered.
Gone in 24 hours.

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 21/07/2010 21:21

Thanks all. I have obsessive tonsil checking syndrome, cant stop peering at it with my head lamp

Sadly am allergic to penecillin. Will go to the Drs tomorrow just to have it recorded. Usually get erythromycin (sp?) to be honest it doesnt make muct difference but in the past have had further sinusy things or labyrinthitis and so I take antibiotics purely to help prevent that.

tiredandgrouchy - I had it really bad last feb, felt like I couldnt breathe was awful, couldnt lye down as felt my throat closed up, I only saw a junior doc (but did see her repeatedly) and I really think I should have seen someone else, she ended up going out room to ask advice but advisor dr never saw me. Without boasting my tonsils are MASSIVE lots of drs say biggest ever seen and so if more experienced Dr had seen them may have had different treatment. I live in fear of getting it that badly again.

Rehersal went ok, I am worried about how much standing is involved - what if I am ill and faint! (very prone to fainting) Will have to sit down, so not only am I wearing a black dress (at brides request) I will be sitting randomly - will look like I REALLY object

I used to get this all the time too. Interestingly my dad, his sis and my bro all used to get it and have all had their tonsills out - they now get pharyngitis or laryngitis.

Here's my theory - if you are prone to tonsillitis I reckon it is your body's way of saying - slow down - your weak point - you need to rest. Also throat problems can often be a symptom of unexpressed emotion and repressed anger.

If you buy soluble aspirin or solpadeine and gargle regularly with them - spit it out though- the anti-inflammatory properties will calm the swollen tonsills and the pain will be relieved. I haven't had full blown t for years now 'cos as soon as I feel it coming on I start to gargle. I also bought homeopathic remedies which I think helped me - I know some think they are bollocks though .

Tis a blardy awful thing though but having them oot as an adult can be quite a difficult op with post-op problems being common.

Rumpel · 21/07/2010 21:30

Oh and I carry tic tacs or mints all the time 'cos always paranoid about bad breath after recurring t . Hope you feel better soonx

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 21/07/2010 21:32

Oh yes rumpel, I get tonsil stones - they are VILE.

OP posts:
Exogenesis · 21/07/2010 21:34

I used to get it all the time and I gargled Asprin in warm water. used to clear it up pretty quickly.

ZeppoMarx · 21/07/2010 22:40

ooo giraffe, they said the same about my tonsils being large (tiredandgrouchy here, have calmed down now ). All the more reason, imo, to insist they take them out. I was told it was repeated infection that made them so big, and indeed after the last big bad infection they remained very big. You don't want tonsils that size getting infected. I've never been so scared, not being able to breathe and the panic that makes it even worse is just awful. Ask them if they've considered quinsey as a diagnosis. It will involve some not very pleasant lancing while some poor junior doctor holds you still, but best to rule it out as that can be very serious indeed

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 22/07/2010 10:23

Been gargaling with salt water, did it last night and then 5 min later this huge (size of my finger nail) white lump came out - YUCK. Had to fight with receptionist for an appointment, I won! Am off now, will report back what they say. I dont actually feel terribly ill, just like the level off illness if you have a cold - annoying and a bit tiredy etc but can still function, my worry is for tomorrow more.

OP posts:
Rumpel · 22/07/2010 10:34

Hmm yes the hardened pus stones - that's what they are - great big lumps of solidified stinking degenerating bacteria - boak! I used to howk them out with my fingernails . Yep could be quinsey.

Let us know how you get on. It's the aching body, sore all over, general malaise thing that gets you down - I faint easily too so was always keeling over when mine were badly infected.

All my problems have gone from my throat to my gut now .

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 22/07/2010 17:59

Well he gave me antibiotics - after a quick google to decide on the dose He asked if I was looking to get them out, I said I was unsure. He said he would advise against it due to all the complications. Says on NHS its 5x a year severe enough to be off work for.

Ive slept most of the afternoon. Need to do some stuff to get ready for the wedding tonight.

Been gargaling and taking antibiotics & pain killers. I just hope I can get through all of tomorrow - hoping caffine may help! Sat and Sun I can curl up in bed and sleep all I like.

OP posts:
Rumpel · 23/07/2010 09:00

I's suggest taking a probitoic and multi-vit and mineral complex - your body must be suffering from antibiotics. Hope you enjoy the wedding and get some soluble co-codamol or solpadeine and gargle gargle............

ppeatfruit · 23/07/2010 12:51

Don't want to sound boring but it could be yr lifestyle! give up alcohol, nicotine dairy and or wheat I guarantee you'll eventually beat the tonsillitis, You'll need to go to bed meanwhile to detox though!!

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 24/07/2010 08:28

I dont drink alcohol or smoke.

I got through the wedding amazingly stayed until the last song! It was absolutely stunning, on the bonnie banks and the sun was out. Sheer adrenaline!

OP posts:
Rumpel · 24/07/2010 09:01

Good for you now go forth with all this advice and stop getting tonsillitis!

cocolepew · 24/07/2010 09:28

Glad you had a good time, I would recommend getting them out, it was hideous but well worth it. I kept getting tonsillitis and told my DR I was taking too much time off work. When I saw the consultant she told me they were ragged from so many bouts.

ppeatfruit · 24/07/2010 10:33

A really good way of beating viral or bacterial infections (but you have to dose as soon as you get the first symptoms) Is pure echinacea it is amazing. Also gargle with Ttree oil and water.
