Toxins and carcinegnics in Tampons, have a look at this

sorry if this has been covered before but it's worth having a look at news from Australia:

"Check the labels of the sanitary pads or tampons that you are going to buy the next time and see whether you spot any of the familiar signs stated in this email. No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer and womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in tampons? Why would they do this?

Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you're going to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so dangerous? Because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did not consider tampons as being ingested and, therefore, did not consider them illegal or dangerous.

This month's Essence magazine mentions 2 manufacturers of a cotton tampon alternative. The companies are: Organic Essentials @ 1-800-765-6491 and Terra Femme @ 1-800-755-0212.

A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado sent the following:

"I am writing this because women are not being informed about the dangers of something most of us use: Tampons. I am taking a class this month and I have been learning a lot about biology and women, including feminine hygiene.

Recently we have learned that tampons are actually dangerous (for other reasons than TSS). After learning about this in our class, most of the females wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for one, am going to do something about it. To start, I want to inform everyone I can, and email is the fastest way that I know how.

HERE IS THE SCOOP: Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmful: Rayon (for absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching).

The tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need bleached white products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem here is that the dioxin, can lead to very harmful problems for a woman.

Dioxin is potentially carcinogenic (cancer-associated) and is toxic to the immune and reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.

Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that there really is no "acceptable" level of exposure to dioxin given that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes from repeated contact (Karen Couppert "Pulling the Plug on the Tampon Industry"). I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month, for 38 years is "repeated contact", wouldn't you? Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly absorbent substance.

Therefore, when fibres from the tampons are left behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer than it would with just cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS (toxic shock syndrome) occurs.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached and that are all cotton. Other feminine hygiene products pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as dangerous.

So, what can you do if you can't give up using tampons? Use tampons that are made from 100% UNBLEACHED cotton.

Unfortunately, there are very few companies that make these safe tampons. They are usually only found in health food stores. Countries all over the world (Sweden, Germany, British Columbia, etc.) have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the US has decided to keep us in the dark about it.

In 1989, activists in England mounted a campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later, the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching (one of the green methods available) (MS magazine, May/June 1995).

WHAT TO DO NOW: Tell people. Everyone. Inform them. We are being manipulated by this industry and the government, let's do something about it! Please write to the companies: Tampax (Tambrands); Playtex; O.B.; Kotex. All the 1800 numbers are listed on the boxes. Let them know that we demand a safe product: ALL COTTON UNBLEACHED TAMPONS.

REMINDER: In order not to lose the impact of this email, I suggest that anyone who wants to forward it to their friends, PLEASE copy this mail and paste it to a NEW message. That way it will not distort the whole message with all the forward arrows. Please do this with consideration and seriousness. Thanks.

HMM, don't know about the rest, but one thing is for sure, you can't have a 'breeding ground' for dioxin. It is a chemical, it doesn't reproduce. You cannot end up with more than you started with (if any)

That alone makes be doubt the detail in this email.

Urban myth ... sorry

couldn't open the urban myth link, but don't see why asbestos should make you bleed more. Also, toxic shock syndrome is caused by in fection, not dioxins.

However, I don't see the need for bleached cotton in sanitary products (just the same as I don't see the point of coloured loo paper), and I am a BIG fan of the mooncup- haven't bought any tampons or pads for 2 years!

aloha · 22/08/2005 08:55

It's all complete rubbish I'm afraid SW. Complete lies and myths.
The reason cotton for tampons is bleached (not using chlorine bleach btw) is because it changes the cotton, rendering rough fibres smooth and much more absorbent. The look of the product is only part of the story. Bleached cotton feels completely different to unbleached and is much more effective in tampons. Tampons contain just cotton.
I'm sure mooncups are lovely if you like them, but I'm sticking with tampons (if I ever have a period again!)

I have written about this stuff! Sorry SW.

spidermama · 22/08/2005 10:13

I, for one, hate tampons. I don't like the smell of them or the strange way they seem to dry me out. Call me old fashioned but I don't want any sort of bleached substance inside my fanny.

Mooncup, Mooncup all the way.

Twiglett · 22/08/2005 10:14

b-lollocks

Toothache · 22/08/2005 10:15

Mooncup.

shudder< >wretch

spidermama · 22/08/2005 10:21

OoooooooH! Why are so many knees jerking at the mention of something so natural? Why so defensive?
It's a rubber cup you put in you fanny fgs! Where's the horror? If you'd rather stick horrible bleached, sucking things up there made by faceless pharmaseutical companies, you're welcome to it. I'll keep my Mooncup thanks very much.
What's the shuddering about? Menstrual blood again? Or the actual cup?

spidermama · 22/08/2005 10:21

Any why so rude Twiglett? Rather personalk wasn't it?

dropinthe · 22/08/2005 10:23

Ooh,Ive never heard of Mooncup-please do tell me more? What am I missing out on??

Twiglett · 22/08/2005 10:24

spidermama · 22/08/2005 10:29

Phew! Paranoid moment Twiglett. I thought it wasn't like you to be nasty. So relieved.

Dropinthe ... i give you ... the mooncup

suzywong · 22/08/2005 10:29

Toothache · 22/08/2005 10:30

lol Spidermama @ your "Why so defensive" comment! I don't think I was being defensive at all.... just having a wee joke really. You on the other hand seem to be very defensive! Must be Monday mornings eh?

baulk< >vom

spidermama · 22/08/2005 10:33

Not at all toothache. I wrote a post about preferring mooncup to tampons and on the face of it was met with 'shudder', 'wretch' and 'bollocks'.

Strong reactions eh? You're welcome to 'em.

Toothache · 22/08/2005 10:33

"Rubber cup in yer fanny".... Spidermama, when you put it like that, how could ANYONE find it repulsive!

dropinthe · 22/08/2005 10:35

Thanks-SM-have saved that to red later-any problems with it?

gingerbear · 22/08/2005 10:35

Ah the joys of cross-posting and misunderstandings....

Toothache · 22/08/2005 10:36

FFS - Spidermama - It was a joke.... following on from a thread I had started a while ago asking if I was the only person that found the idea of a mooncup yukky. Nothing against them at all.

You are being a bit confrontational about this. Really wasn't looking for a fight about it. If someone had said tampons were repulsive I certainly wouldn't take it so personally. So what?! Why are you so offended by the fact I find them yuk?!

dropinthe · 22/08/2005 10:36

Ha-Freudian slip-I'll READ it later!
