I HAD AN EPISODE LAST YEAR WHERE I WAS HAVING PINS & NEEDLES, NUMBNESS, BURNING ETC IN HANDS, ARMS, LEGS, FEET AND CHEST PAINS. THOUSANDS OF BLOODS TESTS REVEALED NOTHING. STARTED AGAIN IN FEB THIS YEAR MAINLY SENSORY PROBLEMS, ICE WATER DROPS, BURNING, FEELING LIKE JUST WET MYSELF, STABBING PAINS, ELEC SHOCK PAINS, CHEST PAINS, HEAVY LEGS - STAIRS ARE KILLING ME OFF, TOO MUCH EFFORT. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE MY NERVOUS SYSTEM HAS GONE MENTAL AND MEMORY GONE TO POT, HAIRLOSS.

IVE SEEN A RHEUMATOLOGIST AGAIN WHO SAYS THERES NOTHING HE CAN DO BECAUSE NOTHING SHOWING IN BLOODS, MUM HAS LUPUS SO THEY WERE LOOKING FOR THAT BUT NOTHING HAS SHOWED UP.

GP HAS SUGGESTED POSSIBLE MS?????? SO IM WAITING TO SEE A NEUROLOGIST BUT AM WONDERING IF FACIAL AND ALL OVER SENSORY PROBLEMS CAN BE CAUSED BY ANYTHING ELSE, LIKE SOMETHING TRIVIAL?????

ANY SUGGESTIONS?????

yes, it can be something relatively simple - have you considered gluten sensitivity?

My ds is gluten sensitive and had loads of neuro problems that were getting worse - until I found a research that links gluten to neurology. If your mum has lupus, then it suggests that you might be susceptible to autoimmune conditions too and this is one way gluten sensitivity can occur.
Gluten reactions can vary in different people too, one will suffer with gut, other with ski, other still with neuro.

My ds had various inconclusive tests, but when I found out that severe gluten damage can be irreversible and moreover, when I read in a scientific publication that if in doubt, diet is worth trying - we did just that. I was blown away and still am (nearly 5 years on).

Brainfog, funnily enough is frequently mentioned as a symptom too, so is neuropathy - possibly explaining your symptoms. You won't know until you try the diet.

Here is one paper you can read:

Do you have swollen lymph glands - do you feel exhausted? If so could be ME.

brainfog · 21/07/2010 18:52

Nightcat, thats really interesting its definately worth a try thank you.

Sharbie, no swollen lymph glands, my dad has M.E., we get a few symptoms the same but although i get fatigue, his is on a different scale altogether, thanks thou.

I dont stand a chance do I, mum with lupus and dad with M.E.

Apart from hairloss your symptons sound like my migraines. These symptons - pins and needles, loss of speech, loss of strength etc manifested themselves in last few weeks of pregnancy. These episodes repeated themselves frequently.

I was tested for stroke, MS, lupus and a range of other frightening diseases and at the end the neurologist said it was migraine. Fingers crossed this is what it is for you.

It is unbelievably frightening and you have my empathy but hold on to the thought that nothing has been proven and some scary things have been ruled out.

I second Nightcats post. Five years ago I too had all of the symptoms you describe and more besides and I was also told it was possible MS. To cut a very long story short it turned out to be gluten causing the problems. Within 10 days of going gluten free the symptoms started to disappear, beginning with the brain fog and the depression that came with it. I felt reborn!!

brainfog · 23/07/2010 14:36

Thanks Guys, I have printed loads of stuff off the net and cant believe it, it fits right in. So here goes I am now gluten free (unless I see no improvement that is).

Good luck x

BF, that's exactly what I did with my ds, I just had to know if there was any hope. Do come back to say how it goes.

For extra moral support you can try celiac.com forum, there is a section there called related disorders & research, people who have been there too (you don't have to be celiac to be affected by gluten).

Another good book is Dangerous Grains by Braly/Hoggan, try the library.

Best neuro to see is the author of the paper I linked above - if you are near Sheffield that is, he published 40+ papers on this, awesome.

I hope it works for you too.
