Come and talk to me about dental sedation

I'm a nervous dental patient but can manage to get through a normal filling with just the injections. However, I have to have an extraction which is a bit tricky so the dentist has suggested that I have IV sedation for it. BUT am terrified of the sedation and being out of control. Scared that I start talking rubbish or something or that I start to feel things and am not in control enough to tell him.
Please tell me your experiences as am starting to worry about the sedation more than the extraction. He also does gas and air masks for children so am wondering about this option.

this is really interesting, I have to have my wisdom teeth out eventually as they are coming through with the pointy bits facing the front of my mouth!
my dentist has recomended I have sedation as I am a bit of a nervy patient
I have seen madazalam in use when popping shoulders back in, and always thouht that the patient can still feel it, but when asked later what it was like they said was no problem! must be a weird sensation!

I had sedation for removal of 2 impacted wisdom teeth - I'd been dreading having them out so much I'd lived with them being painful on and off for 15 years! The sedation was amazing - I had no feelings of being out of control, but afterwards had very little recollection of exactly what happened. No pain at all and felt completely relaxed throughout.

Didn't say or do anything embarrassing as far as I'm aware, although I remember feeling strangely invincible when crossing the road afterwards and needed DH to stop me from crossing at the wrong time!

I had IV sedation for wisdom tooth extraction a few years ago. For me the most stressful thing was that it took them ages to get the cannula into me, they kept trying the backs of my hands even though I told them that my veins are v difficult to find.

Finally they got it in and gave me a shot and said 'you should be feeling more relaxed now', I snarled at them and they gave me some more, which was marvellous. Felt like having quite a lot of gin. I was aware of what was going on but didn't care about any of it. I think afterwards I was a bit oblivious, wanting to jump up out of the chair saying that I was perfectly fine, wanting to demonstrate that I could walk in a straight line so that I could go home (and I have no idea whether they asked me to do this...)

Thanks for these encouraging stories. Appointment in mid august so going to try and not worry too much. You wouldn't believe the scenarios I can make up in my head

Had it all done yesterday and it was amazing. IV sedation is the way to go if you are nervous. It is a real hard thing to describe, I realise that now. It's like I was fully aware and conscious during the procedure (was able to talk to the dentist) but have now forgotten I was aware and it feels like I was asleep. Even though I know I wasn't asleep. Directly after the treatment I got up with dh holding my hand and walked out and made my next appointment wth the receptionist. Apparently I chatted very coherently all the way home but I can't remember the journey at all.
Would highly recommend it if you are a nervous patient.

I'm having my wisdom teeth and a couple of molars Blush under sedation in a couple of weeks.
How long does it take to feel normal afterwards?
