Sat afternoon I was bitten by a horsefly. It's very itchy, very sore and very swollen and isn't getting any better.

Does anyone have any ideas to help relieve it, please?

It's driving me mad.

Thanks

Hi Everyone. I was bitten the weekend of Aug 4th by a horsefly. The next day, i felt sick all day, then after that i was ok. Now fastforward to this last wednesday. I suddenly fell ill and I still am. Ive had migraine headaches, fever (its gone now), upset stomach, weak, dizzy, hives and profusely sweating. I have no idea what would have caused this other than the horsefly bite but it was over 10 days ago! Has this ever happened to anyone else?? Im better now but still weak and sweating.

Oh my gosh! I was bitten in the middle of my inside thigh on Saturday, didnt feel it, didnt see it. However later in the day it started itching... i now have swelling and a heated red mass from my knee up towards my hip!!!!
I cannot believe how badly this is itching and hurting - non of the creams have worked , can't get to the dr's, just going to ride it out... with LOTS of moaning!

I am presently being driven round the bend with what I think is horsefly bites only I seem to be a medical mystery to our lovely NHS. Ihave 5 skin lesions which started as bruises materialised into what looked like blisters then developed a black scab to which my son said I looked like I have been shot. Repeated visits to GP even AE at hosp still nobody has advised me what to do. The pain is terrible I have tried saltwater savlon sudacreme antihistamines to no avail. Please can anybody help!!!!

Horse flies are horrible dirty things. Bites are often infected.

Hello all, First time poster here....bloody Horse Flies....I was bitten 8 weeks ago, normal reaction of swelling etc. Now I have this lump at the site. I work away, so don't get the chance to visit my GP often, but I reckon I will have to. Horrible little buggers....every time I have been bitten by them I have suffered.

Horseflies are riddled with sooo much bacteria, im a little stunned that people are not seeking medical advice??

Listen to dunanddusted who has detailed through experience the severity.

When you are bitten, it is your bodies normal response to attempt to "get rid" of the invasion through the inflammatory response. No matter how old or young you are, a bite can be potentially life threatening (not to scare monger).

Signs or infection:

Reddness (bodies inflammatory response to fight infection)

Heat (feel the area, does it feel hot?)

Pain (everyones different here, some may feel pain, some not)

Itching (this is the release of histamine on your body to attempt to assist in stopping infection - a sign that your body is reacting to foreign substance)

Swelling with or without weeping from bite area

If the swelling spreads, and continues to be hot to touch - you need to get to gp for antibiotics.

Best way of seeing if it has spread and monitor it is to draw a line around area. if it spreads beyond line, seek gp/medical help.

I was bitten in the summer and ended up on steroids and antibiotics (however, only after I insisted at the hospital on my 3rd visit they give me something for it as it was getting bigger and bigger).

I always react like this.

Nasty nasty things horseflies!

alypaly · 08/10/2009 15:32

harriett1..were they caused by a bite or were they just a bruise

SolidGhoulBrass · 08/10/2009 15:37

ANy bite that shows spreading swelling and redness ie keeps on swelling and spreading needs to be taken to the GP.
I got bitten a couple of weeks ago and had to have antibiotics. I normally try to avoid antibiotics but was thoroughly frightened, both by the skin reaction and the dizziness and nausea

alypaly · 08/10/2009 15:46

my son got about ten mosi bites in summer and his arms went so swollen. They blistered and then went all infected within 3 days.
Had course of flucloxacillin as he had cellulitis which can be life threatening. The first antibiotic didnt work and the Gp said he would have to have IV antibiotics as the infection was tracking up his arm. I was terrified.they were only mosies from britain.
He is going to Costa rica with school next year and i am terrified of him being bitten

Read through the thread. Although it is ancient, it has good advice. I would go to the doctor, but then I am a bit of a hypochondriac Smile

Hi
I have the perfect remedy after discovering that I have a very sensitive skin and I am very susceptible to insect bites.
Like you I've been bitten by a horsefly the 2 days ago and to avoid further inflammation etc.. I took my Proflavanol dosage and it worked like a charm and the bite is almost healed.
Here where you can get some Proflavanol shop.usana.com/shop/cart/ProductDetails?ProductID=110.010101&shopperSource=distWeb&distributorId=3905576
Take 4-6 right away and then take another dosage the day after and you'll notice the benefit.
Let me know if you have questions or need more information. I'll be happy to share all I know.
Take care and don't wait just try and you'll thank me later.
Natalie

apply a hot teaspoon to the bite so it almost burns. A one second 'ouch' gives almost instant relief and no itching for several hours. Apparently, the heat kills the histamine produced by your body that's causing the irriation. I have a horse so I'm constantly bitten and honestly this cure REALLY works - instantly.

Ceribos · 21/07/2017 22:06

I currently have around 30 horsefly bites around my body I'm in absolute agony scratching, they are weeping and I've tried everything, I googled it and came across this thread and joined mumsnet so I could tell you guys that thank goodness I've got an aloe vera plant as it's the only thing that has worked, may have looked like a weirdo stood in my kitchen rubbing the plant all over me but damn I feel so much better!

I really suffer with horse fly bitesand have ended up in hospital. I have just heard they hate the smell of dettol. Dilute 500ml to make 750ml with water and spray yourself if need be. I am going to try it. On route home from France with two huge bites couldn't get dettol there.
