Swollen eyelid

My 14 year old dd has a very swollen eyelid - she woke up with it yesterday morning and it was the same this morning. It's not hot or red, there's no 'head', like a stye - it's just swollen all over. She says it's painful, and it's very irritating. Any ideas? Any home remedies?

Does she have hayfever? We took our son to hospital when very small with seriously swollen eyes (outside and the eyeball-scary) They told us it was common in hayfever sufferers, and allergy. Try antihistamines. You get them as eyedrops or tablets or syrup. My son uses Benadryl. Different types work for different people. Ceterizine is the ingredient that works for my son. You can get these much cheaper in Tesco own brand. If it's hayfever you need to take antihistamines continuously for them to work well. I have constant allergies and have found the only eyecream that brings down my eyes. They are swollen every time I wake up. Possibly the soap powder or fabric conditioner on the bedding. The cream is Boots Protect and Perfect eye cream. Antihistamine eyedrops may be fastest. Ask the pharmacist.

Thank you very much - I did wonder about offering hersome Piriton but I didn't because it's only one eye. If it's still swollen when she comes home from school i'll give her some.

Hi. I take Piriton myself but only at night as it makes me fall asleep. It's known to be a sedative. I'm 49 and menopausal and haven't slept properly for three years so I take children's Piriton liquid to knock myself out. Very effective. I find HC45 cream (from any chemist) is great for swelling too. Hydrocortisone. You are not supposed to use it near eyes though. It brings down the swelling caused by allergy. Perhaps on the chest. Good luck.
