would a cricked neck make me feel this ill?

Yesterday I wrenched my neck while putting my halter neck swimming costume on over my head . Woke up with very stiff neck but felt fine otherwise. As day went on I developed a headache and by early evening I was feeling so ill I had to go to bed - felt sick, had pins and needles in my arms, felt very weak-limbed and completely exhausted. As soon as I put my neck on the pillow I started to feel better - and after about half an hour felt well enough to get up again! Still feel headachy and tired but OK really.

Would wrenching my neck cause these symptoms or is something else going on?

Oh, and my neck is making horrible crunching sounds when I rotate it!

That doesn't sound good, you need to get this looked at, it sounds like you've trapped a nerve, I would say pop and see a chiropractor but the crunching sound is telling me you should pop to A&E and get it looked at there first.

I hope you are OK.

Be aware there is a virus going round that starts with sore stiff neck and runs through all of that. It has taken me over a week to feel able to be out of bed and doing stuff. Still dont feel right and probably should have seen the doc last week. Dont feel ill enough to pester them. Also have had chest/breathing issues to go with this.

Suggest you get checked out to be sure.

I definitely wrenched my neck yesterday so don't think it's virus.

I'd pop and get it checked. Go and see a chiropractor, they can send you for an x-ray if you need one.

I strongly advise against going to see a chiropractor.

Their diagnostic abilty is liekly to be poor.
Their treatment (and the excess x-rays used) a carry risks.

You might have damaged blood vessels or nerves in your neck.
Thic could be serious, go to a Medical Doctor today and get it checked out.

I get migraines associated with my slightly dodgy neck - if I crick it doing something, I am certain to get one and I get sick/tired etc.

If it goes on, then see your GP

Go and see your GP, it could be lots of things.

I'm being checked out by a neurologist for other ongoing issues, but have been told that I have some osteoarthritis in my neck. It clicks and cracks when I move my head, and I get fierce migrainey headaches. Like you, I get the pins and needles. It often feels like my head is too heavy for my neck, and I have to lie down for a while. If I have to turn my head quickly (like when I'm driving), I can get very dizzy too.

A friend (who had been quite dismissive of how I was) moved a heavy piece of furniture, felt something "go" in her neck and ruptured a disc in her neck. She also had similar symptoms. She ended up having surgery, but is now fine.

Please go and see a doctor, as it is the only way you can find out what is wrong.

it sounds to me like you have trapped a nerve; I have done this before and it has caused all the symptoms you describe. I would NOT recommend chiropracty as that tends to be very aggressive and hard core; osteo or physio is much better.

swingitagain · 14/07/2010 09:43

i did this to my neck (i just slept funny), was awful, very painful and made me feel really ill.

I went to the local physio and had it checked out - he gave me a massage, heat treatment which really helped.

I'd go to a physio and just get them to check it - you can usually get in on the same day.

the pins and needles sound like pressure on nerves from inflammation, due to the injury.

weak limbs would concern me more so i think a GP appt today would be best.

sphil · 14/07/2010 13:01

It went off comepletely the day after I posted - no neck pain, headache, nothing. Today it's come back - only slight neck pain, but headache back with a vengeance. So think I will make a drs appt. Thanks for all your advice.
