miscarriage or something else? TMI alert

Have namechanged due to severe ickyness of what follows.

I have no reason to believe I am/was pregnant. Am sexually active but have been using condoms and have had no apparent 'accidents'.

I don't have regular periods so I don't keep track of gaps but don't think it's been more than 5/6 weeks since last one, which is normal for me.

I have always had heavy periods (have to use super plus extra tampons and still leak at night) with lots of clots. But I have NEVER had a period like this!

I have been losing blood for at least 2 weeks, probably more like 3. The first week or so was like a 'normal' period (as above). But over the past few days I have passed several large pieces of tissue. Most has been smooth like clots but up to 4 inches in length. Another piece was a much more solid bit of flesh, not as dark as the clots. It was just under an inch long, about half an inch wide and half an inch deep.

Yesterday I had a super plus extra tampon in (plus some extra toilet tissue stuffed up) but after an hour and a half I had to run to the toilet because I had blood running down my legs. I felt quite light-headed at the time but feel ok now.

So, what is/was this? When I try to look up my symptoms online, it comes up miscarriage. But that's assuming that the person was pregnant in the first place. I have no reason to think I was pregnant (had no symptoms).

I do want to try for DC3 next year but now I'm really worried that there is something wrong with me/my fertility.

What could this be and is it likely to happen again?

You really need to see your gp.

If you def aren't pregnant and this is a period it is far too heavy to be classed as normal. You can't go on losing blood at this rate without becoming ill.

Please ring your surgery and ask if doctor can phone you at the end of his clinic. Don't be fobbed off, if necessary tell receptionist you are losing a lot of blood and can't get out the house.

Tell doctor exactly what you've said on here and he'll decide what's to be done.

All the best, let us know how it goes for you.

ReasonableDoubt · 12/07/2010 10:38

Definitely make an urgent appt to see your GP. Heavy, prolonged bleeding like this isn't normal.

MmeLindt · 12/07/2010 10:39

I agree with WhyMe.

See your doc, and if he cannot see you go to A&E or EPU (if you have one nearby).

It may be something else, but you really do need to get it checked out.

SagacityNell · 12/07/2010 10:50

As others have already said, it needs checked out anyway.

Not sure shoving loo roll up there is a good idea either

MrsRhettButler · 12/07/2010 10:53

agree with others - see you gp

as an aside, instead of using loo roll you could use a sanitary towel as well as a tampon, my friend bleeds heavily and does this

MunchMummy · 12/07/2010 11:02

Hi,

From my experience it sounds like a miscarriage. I passed clots the size of the palm of my hand - huge!! Oh, and lost alot of blood (filling up a towel to saturation point in 10 mins)

I'd taken 2 years to get pregnant before the miscarriage, but after I got pregnant again in only 2 months - so for me it improved fertility.

But I'd go and see your GP anyway - whatever it is its not normal and needs checking over.

Good luck,

But what would the GP do?

I have a phobia of being touched which makes any medical 'intervention' almost impossible. Even something as innocuous as a HCP touching my shoulder has caused me to have a panic attack in the past. I would sooner lie in my bed and bleed to death than let someone do an internal.

I could (with difficulty) cope with an ultrasound if that's what they would try to use to diagnose me.

I really don't want to contact my GP- have been wanting to change for some time. I am feeling quite emotionally fragile and know that the rude receptionist would have me in tears.

I'm only losing v small amounts of blood now so dont know if I'm really justified in going to A&E.

I kind of just want to know if others have had this and it hasn't been a sign of something wrong. - Like, is it maybe fibroids and does that mean it's going to happen again or that I'll have trouble conceiving? I don't think I'm very fertile anyway so that is my biggest worry.

You could go to the GP and tell them your phobia first of all.
But you really do need to ask them.

Went to A&E today. they did a pregnancy test which was positive.

But they dont have any ultrasound machines there so, after having a go at me for refusing a blood test, gave me the number for the EPU. She said I should phone and ask for an appointement within the next week!

Phoned and have an appointment for a scan tomorrow.

beesonmummyshead · 14/07/2010 15:10

oh no I hope you are ok. How did the scan go. Well done for being so brave.

toomuchinformationalert · 14/07/2010 17:17

Went to EPU for scan. When I made the appointment they asked if I had kids and I said yes. But when I went for the scan they said our toddler wouldn't be able to come in so I'd have to rearrange it for when I could get childcare.

The woman said that the scan might not be conclusive anyway so she gave me a pregnancy test to take in a few days and come back if it's still positive.
