Hand foot and mouth

I am pretty sure I have got hand foot and mouth as have horrific sore throat, a mouth full of ulcers and last night started getting lots of spots on hands and feet.

I went to out of hours doctors yesterday (before arrival of spots) and got antibiotics (only 2nd lot in over 10 years - that's how shite I was feeling) But I take it these aren't going to do much good as it's a virus.

Everything I can find online says that adults only experience HF&M mildly but I am feeling dreadful. I can hardly eat anything because my mouth and throat hurt so much.

I am assuming that DD must have had it - she had some strange spots on her mouth and feet and lots on her bottom and a bit of a temperature last week - I assumed she was teething

I am not usually a wimp when it comes to pain but have taken more pain relief for the last few days than I did when I had DD.

Any advice?

Aww well could be hfand m
My dd had it and it was mild for her but the docs did say highly contagious so keep away fromm vulnerable people and just take care of yourself.
Tea tree lotion is good for the blisters btw

Oooh nasty, ds1 had this and really suffered, can you ask your gp for that mouth numbing spray I forget the name of? He wouldn't give it to ds1, but might to an adult.

Some soluble aspirin and rinse it all round your mouth for a minute or two? I had it a few years ago and felt dreadful. Like flu. Think you are right about antibiotics being useless as its viral.

Clayhead · 11/07/2010 21:07

Ouch, I feel for you! I caught it off dd a few years ago and my mouth was full of ulcers. I didn't take antibiotics and it did go of its own accord after a few uncomfortable days.

Soluble painkillers (cocodamol or paracetamol best)

Difflam spray or mouthwash (can buy from chemist)

Bonjela

Antibiotics don' work

Sip fluids through a straw. Eating probably too painful. Its viral and tends to resolve within 2-3 days. Nasty and painful though.

Thank you - I am feeling a bit better today and have managed to eat something

Do you think I'm right to think that DD must have had it already, albeit only mildly & that I've caught it from her?

She is only 14 months and I obviously had zero immunity to it so I can't quite see how that works

Yes, most likely caught it from her. I also had it when DS was 10m, a couple of days after he started with sore throat, fever and few spots on tongue I ended up with 30-40 ulcers in my mouth. So painful! Be warned- you can get it more than once.

thishurtsalot · 12/07/2010 13:05

Nooooooo! I've been consoling myself with the thought that 'at least I won't get it again'!

I've had it twice. And DS. Glad you are feeling a bit better today.
