Tory swap

Even though I’m generally Tory I was sad to see Gavin Williamson on Twitter and realise he hadn’t lost. So up to five more Tories you wish had lost but the twist is who would you have back in their place?

Gavin Williamson, Alex Chalk
Suella Braverman, Penny Mourdant
Christopher Chope, Johnny Mercer
Richard Holden, Robert Buckland
Mark Francois, Lucy Frazer

I’m not a Tory. Far from it. I would be perfectly happy to see Rory Stewart back in there. In fact a One Nation Tory Opposition would do me nicely thank you.

newnamethanks · 08/07/2024 18:07

None of the above. If I've got to have a Tory, I want one of the old kind who had - albeit often slender - a sense of social responsibility.

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2024 18:24

Who exactly would want the vile odium that is Johnny Mercer back??

I don't want any of those back, OP!

mybeesarealive · 08/07/2024 18:28

Sir Gavin for leader! Who'd vote for Sir Kier in 2029 when you can have a fireplace salesman instead!

newnamethanks · 08/07/2024 18:50

Hmm. You may have a point. How about pairing Gav the fireplace salesman with Grant the double-glazing salesman? They could do 2 for 1 offers.

parkrun500club · 10/07/2024 14:35

Alex Chalk seems a lot more sensible than most of them.

But Boris had already cleared out most of the even vaguely sensible ones so I'd say none of them really.

I'd have liked to see IDS lose his seat - the independent candidate running because she had the hump at being deselected made sure he kept it (although I know she blamed the Labour party for selecting someone else and parachuting them in). And I was disappointed that Braverman kept hers. I wonder if she'll have joined Reform before the end of the year.

Not a Tory fan but Tobias Elwood always seemed very reasonable!

Definitely swap him with Suella!

Got to be Michael Fabricant for me.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2024 22:31

I thought the Tories were beyond shocking me but the revelation that Fabricant's long term partner is Andy Street, ex Mayor of West Midlands was a revelation. It just seems to me to be such an unlikely pairing. Still, none of my business, good luck to them.

ToWhitToWhoo · 14/07/2024 18:42

The ones you mention; also:

Danny 'Dunning' Kruger; perhaps replace with Tobias Ellwood

Esther McVey with....I would have said Damian Green, but he's a bit problematic on a personal level. Maybe Victoria Prentis, probably the sanest of the five who fell in the Oxfordshire bloodbath.

Of course, the one Tory who I would REALLY have liked to keep his seat is Giles Watling, ex-MP for Clacton. But that's probably not the sort of situation that you're referring to.

Re IDS keeping his seat - that was 100% Labour's fault. They were cruel to Faiza Shaheen, and publicly humiliated her. She was a brilliant candidate who'd worked hard for years in her constituency. She almost won in 2019.
Her supporters would likely have voted Green, Lib Dem or spoilt their ballots if she hadn't stood. She didn't 'have the hump'. She stood as an Independent because her supporters urged her to.
I'm sad she didn't win, and that IDS kept his seat; but, I don't blame Faiza in the slightest. Totally Labour. Purely because she's on the left, and they were purging the left. One of the many reasons I couldn't vote Labour this time, and had to vote Green.

HelenaWaiting · 22/07/2024 23:46

I wish IDS had lost his seat (it was Labour's fault, @TryingToSeeTheFunnySide) and also Chris Philp and Jeremy Hunt. I wouldn't place any of them with Tories - they're such disgusting, smug, entitled tossers. I hope Mordaunt and Mercer stand in the next GE and get completely humiliated.

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 23/07/2024 06:35

@HelenaWaiting yes, a few Tories I'd like to see go next time. Also, a few on the Labour right (I'm a lefty) I'd like to see lose their seats next time too. Wes Streeting very nearly lost his to a young Palestinian woman, and a brilliant candidate. Only about 500 votes in it. You probably know all this anyway.
It was a funny one this election for me. I felt very ambivalent on the run-up. Delighted the Tory government was FINALLY about to be ousted. But, I'm so upset by the direction Labour has taken, and the purge of the left, especially Jeremy Corbyn, whom I love.
I voted Green, mostly as a peaceful protest vote, and to send Labour a message.
The morning after the night before, I felt pretty positive though. Some disappointments, such as Faiza (I longed for her to win) But, overall - I wanted the Tories out, and the only way, currently, for that to happen was for Labour to win. That happened. But, also, Labour's vote share was quite a bit down, as many on the left flocked to The Green Party and/or, Independents, including JC in Islington North, and Carla Denyer in Bristol. A fact Labour have to take note of, and they must know now that they've really upset the left.
I think people will get disillusioned with the current government pretty soon; and my hope is our limiting two party system will soon collapse, and we can have a more representative parliament. Of course that does have a downside, as, in addition to Greens and Indies, it could also benefit Reform, which terrifies me. My guess is that many Reform voters are just looking for a bit of an anti-establishment protest, like lots of Leave voters. I don't actually believe they're all racists and fascists at all. Hopefully, we've got time to reach them, and offer them genuine ethical alternatives.
In the interim, I'm giving this government a chance. We'll see...

'Labour should do this and that . . . I voted Green'. Honestly, clarity of thought not going down well in your house?

newnamethanks · 23/07/2024 07:28

O, further joy. Sue Ellen Braverman will be given free rein to spout on LBC for 3 hours this morning. Don't worry, she's discovered compassion for child poverty and will be banging on about that. Novel.

Sorry? Was that directed at me? I was a bit taken back by your post.
Yes, my thoughts on the matter are pretty clear. Not saying Labour should do anything. Just that they obviously by now must know many of us on the left voted elsewhere, partly to send them a message. I voted Labour in 2017 and 2019. Loads of usual Labour voters voted Green for the same reason. It's entirely up to Labour whether they work to get those votes back again or not.
Not sure why you responded the way you did? I was just sharing my experience and thoughts, which is fairly normal I think 🤷‍♀️
