Started today at 3pm. You can watch it back here:

Thoughts?

I found it refreshing - no pissing about, no u-turns, a respectful discourse. Just my view.

Watch live: PM Sir Keir Starmer holds news conference following first cabinet meeting

Sir Keir Starmer is summoning his cabinet later this morning for a meeting to establish their agenda after the election win.Following the gathering, Sir Keir...

And probably the KC as well- I've never heard of him, but I trust that Keir will have chosen the best person for that role.

I didn't know anything about him either but it's clear just from social media that he's a very well respected barrister. Some think him a bit too left-wing but doesn't seem any doubt as to his credentials.

Remember that Suella Braverman used to have that job purely on the basis that it would keep the Telegraph happy.

We’re talking about Kier Starmer and his new government in 2024, not Peter Mandleson 20 years ago!

Edited

That was the last Labour government, was it not?

Yes, but you seem to have missed that this is a thread about Kier Starmer’s first press conference!

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2024 21:45

I prefer to see it as undeniable proof that people who are assuming that Labour NEVER have scandals and never put a foot wrong are likely to be disappointed going forward.

Nobody’s assuming that, just commenting that Starmer’s got off to a good start. Which he has.

KnittedCardi · 06/07/2024 15:04

You do realize that was already in process right?

You do realise that means he was planning for government before being elected, which shows confidence and an ability to plan ahead, right?

Cash for Honours scandal
Peter Mandelson's resignation (and subsequent return)
Jo Moore's 'burying of bad news' on September 11
David Kelly
Need I go on?
There seems to be a assumption on MN that political scandals are entirely down to the Conservatives. The last Labour government had their fair share.
But we don't talk about those.

Could you explain how any of that is relevant to Keir Starmer’s government?

cardibach · 06/07/2024 22:42

KnittedCardi · 06/07/2024 20:03

Sorry. But several trusts are already doing this, and have been for some time. These things take months of planning and agreement.

Yes. But now there’s an agreement to share the expertise and experience with other trusts, rather than it being a desperate emergency reaction in individual trusts.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/07/2024 22:51

I thought the press conference was great. He clearly stated what he had done and his intentions for the next week and the near future. He was professional, clear and confident. No slogans, no lies, no bluster.
He answered all the questions from the media fully and clearly in a friendly manner. It was great to see him being so relaxed and confident. Long may it continue!

Exactly that. I can’t think of any other incoming government that’s been so well prepared and well organised. They just knew the carping would start before Starmer even left the palace and nothing has been left to chance.

I did not vote Labour and do not like Starmer. That said, I was impressed by his speech.
However, I am a bit 🙄at some of the comments here and the hero worship at his feet. When Sunak took over as leader, there was 'No bluster, no obfuscating, no tetchy or inflammatory retorts' either. Starmer is not unique, despite what some think.
He can definitely talk the talk - whether he can walk the walk will become apparent in the next few months.
I genuinely hope he can, because we need new blood.
I am going to bookmark this page to see if pps are still so starry-eyed by Christmas.

Ah yes, Sunak who - in his first speech as PM, promised 'integrity, professionalism and accountability' and then made Suella Braverman Home Secretary. The same woman who had had to resign after breaching data regulations, so breaking the ministerial code.

Well that's sort of proving my point really. It's not what Starmer says today thar counts, it's his actions in the coming months.
Pps are speaking as if his pledges have already been accomplished when they are still just words.

He’s been PM for less than 48 hours. He’s got off to a great start, let’s see what happens before we start carping, shall we?

PerfectYear321 · 06/07/2024 23:19

Peston is so annoying with his ridiculously loooooonnnnnngggg and slooooowwww questions

I forgot what he was asking by the time he finished 🙄

If you honestly believe Starmer will do something like that after presumably being alive during the last couple of years, then I need you to put down the crack pipe

FiveFoxes · 06/07/2024 15:29

His manner of speaking was SO much better than when he was campaigning. He can actually speak really well.

I am impressed by giving Timpson and Vallance jobs. And probably the KC as well- I've never heard of him, but I trust that Keir will have chosen the best person for that role.

But they do have to deliver on things. That is what they will be judged on.

And finally - he must be so tired! I had a busy day on Thursday and then did an all night count of the votes. I had a couple of hours sleep on Friday morning and a quiet day, but last night I needed a lot of sleep and I still feel exhausted. The cabinet were all gathered this morning before I was awake and KS has a busy plan for the week - Washington and tour of UK. How is he not tired?! He's a lot older than me too!

Yes, how is he doing it?!Confused🤯

PerfectYear321 · 06/07/2024 23:34

Just watched it and I am very happy and hopeful. I'm usually a Labour voter, but am not tribal. I voted tactically this time to get a Labour government and am liking what I am seeing already.

Civil service breathing a sigh of relief!

Love this. So relaxed but focussed. I’ll be on the case if he lets everyone down, but so far I’m only seeing good things.

Thank you for that. So moving.
