Anyone good with languages who can share what EU papers are saying about the Labour win?

Starmer’s favourite phrase doesn’t have quite the ring to it in Spanish:
“Mi padre era un obrero fabricante de herramientas”

At the moment, it seems as though they are mostly regurgitating stuff from the UK media. It’s an interesting question. Are there any novel angles on what’s happened so far?

Proud of myself for getting that. 1900 days on Duolingo Spanish and counting.

In my partners country we're being hailed as lone voice for the truimph of centre left politics over far right populism that's drowning the rest of the western world.

Probably wondering why Elmo rocked up at 3am.

Interesting. Which country is he from?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 07/07/2024 14:50

All the coverage I've seen in France has been pretty positive.

leamington66 · 07/07/2024 14:56

Wall Street Journal focused on the debt levels and how constrained he is. Commented France in the same place and that people want change but there is no money.
Their opinion piece was a little more damming.
Worth reading but behind a paywall

In Le Monde it’s “ issu d’une famille modeste son pere etait outilleur et sa mere infirmiere. They are saying he is not charismatic but he’s determined.

Not Europe, but my Australian cousin told me that her morning paper said our election was a step in the right direction to the world getting more humanitarian politicians.

That's nice.
My friend in France thinks it's very good news, bearing in mind events there.

I would agree with that.

TheGander · 07/07/2024 15:30

@Maireas I think we’ve had enough of “ charismatic” politicians lately!

Quite 😊- for a lifetime!

I was wondering what they thought of Lord Binhead...

There are a few Count Binface interviews on YouTube with foreign news organisations such as Reuters, and one with a Canadian television station.

The ‘New York Times’ had profiles of some of the rising stars. They mentioned American influence on Rachel Reeves.

Read them online with the Google Translate plug-in for Chrome. It's pretty good, and where it doesn't quite get something you can usually figure it out.

DW.com has an English language page.

You may be disappointed how unimportant the UK is to the rest of the world. The focus is on France today where their election is likely to have greater significance.

I'm in France and there has been a surprising amount of coverage of the UK general election actually.

In the run-up, yes. But yesterday's news is tonight's chip paper and the EU press have moved on, e.g. https://www.lemonde.fr/

I was just looking at Le Monde. Item No.1 is obviously the French elections. No.2 is the Tour de France. No.3 is Keir Starmer visiting Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I'm quite surprised.

Alfreddoeblin · 07/07/2024 18:19

In die Welt there were a lot of below the line comments about the end of the UK because we’d turned to socialism. Didn’t like to tell them the LP wasn’t really a socialist party anymore.

theculture · 07/07/2024 19:25

I live in one European country and have a partner from another, the people I know in both countries have been very perplexed by British behaviour in the last few years from Brexit onwards and are approving of a more grown up stable government - whilst worrying about the way the rest of Europe is going!
