General election 2024

Jess Philips - what was happening locally?

MidnightPatrol · 05/07/2024 11:17

I have seen the video this morning of Jess Philips standing up to a baying mob, on announcement of her victory in Birmingham Yardley.

She refers to a campaign of harassment of her staff - slashing tyres and filming etc.

There is then clearly a mob of people in the venue shouting.

What is the wider story / background on this? Who are the people intimidating them? Is it another candidate?

I meant extreme Islamists whose only care is for Palestine ( whilst studiously avoiding actual genocide).
I have no problem with a Muslim MP who is there to represent all constituents of whatever religion or race in their community.
I have a big problem with those who would side with Terrorists and make it the whole focus, whether they are Muslim or not ( like the odious George Galloway).

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 05/07/2024 13:19

No I mean it's been obvious throughout the campaign if you were looking. There has been a story there. It's not been reported. Why, we can only speculate.

Just to be clear just because Jess Phillips pandered to extremists in her constituency in the past doesn’t make her responsible for their behaviour. However sometimes people like that (supporters of terrorism and Islamic extremism) get worse and target people if they sense weakness. But their conduct is still their responsibility- just that perhaps Jess could have dealt with them more robustly in the first place.

I'm confused here. Wanting a ceasefire in Gaza is not pandering to 'extremists'. Do you mean she is supporting Hamas? I can't find any information on her saying she's supporting Hamas. Do you have that evidence please?

They're not allowed to report election stuff while the vote is open.

It sounds like it’s been going on for weeks

Surely this would be applicable.

stuckdownahole · 05/07/2024 13:30

I think that this, and losing three seats to pro-Palestine independents in areas with a high Muslim population, is probably helpful to the Labour party in the long term.

Labour was accused in the past of not quite pandering to religious sectarians, but certainly flirting with them. Yesterday's results demonstrate that Labour is not on the same side as Islamists or anyone who bases their worldview on the idea that Muslims are always the good guys.

EsmaCannonball · 05/07/2024 13:33

Every dodgy, nasty comment by a Reform candidate made the national news but I've only seen reports of this kind of extremism and harassment on the local news and only that in recent days.

Women don't matter.

The transcript of that podcast should send shivers down the spine of every woman in the country. It is horrific.

Unlikely. Labour couldn't even defend Rosie Duffield. And trans activists are toddlers compared to far-right Islamists lol

I'm sure some in the party will find a way to blame it on 'white supremacy'. These candidates and their supporters 'couldn't help themselves', 'they mean well', 'they are just passionate and got carried away' etc etc. 😆

The sky is dark with chickens coming home to roost. I’m not a Jess fan but ffs this is horrendous

Sidebeforeself · 05/07/2024 13:57

I felt very uncomfortable and sorry for Jess Phillips watching that brief clip.

However, I did bristle slightly at her remark about a strong woman , as she has often struggled to articulate clearly on where she stands on the whole TWAW debate

Ohyoudodoyou · 05/07/2024 13:59

I'm enraged all over again having watched this for the second time. What a lack of class, of civility, sportsmanship from her opponents. Are these things consigned to history now? I saw Jeremy Hunt's gracious speech and what a stark contrast to how Jess' s hecklers receive the news.

TheColourOutOfSpace · 05/07/2024 14:02

It's sad, but to borrow a popular meme - Labour fucked around and now they are going to find out.

I can't believe I left the Middle East for good almost 20 years ago and this shite is now here. Sigh.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 05/07/2024 14:05

The "strong woman" wording did stand out. It's in her programming though.

MidnightPatrol · 05/07/2024 14:06

AutumnCrow · 05/07/2024 13:54

The MailOnline are reporting on it prominently now. Obviously it's for the Mail's own reasons and agenda, but it's out there (with clip):

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13603707/Moment-furious-Labour-MP-Jess-Phillips-takes-pro-Palestinian-mob-booed-beat-independent.html

Presumably they’re reporting on it because it’s a notable event that has taken place…?

Her being a strong woman is irrelevant to her position on trans issues surely…?

TBH I think there has been a lot of anti-Jess Philips rhetoric for many years, from the incel crowd.

And this is where it has escalated to - people thinking they have free rein because they get positive feedback from their peers that they’re doing a good thing.

The internet has a lot to answer for, in regard to the targeted harassment of public figures like MPs. There’s people making aggressive and derogatory sexual / physical comments about her on twitter every day of the week.

Sidebeforeself · 05/07/2024 14:10

@MidnightPatrol I wasn’t saying her views on TWAW means she’s not a strong woman. I meant that at times she has been hesitant to oppose an ideology that would argue that those horrible people shouting abuse at her could be defined as women too.

Only in so far as knowing what the word 'woman' means, and the reality of living as a biological one all the time.

anyway...back to the topic.

Do you think the men heckling her are likely to identify as women?

Comments like this betray zero understanding of transwomen.

Hamas supporters on our streets intimidating folk - what's new

Lalgarh · 05/07/2024 14:16

I saw footage of female Labour Party workers in Birmingham being harassed. It was really unpleasant.

A group called The Muslim Vote has been behind the success of Independents in the election. A religious-grouped voting bloc in UK mainland politics is not a great development, IMO. Obviously these people aren't voting on religion itself but on foreign policy issues but I don't like that there is a sizeable minority of people who are sympathetic to totalitarian, extremist regimes with terrible records on human rights. I feel the same way about Nigel Farage and some of the Reform lot clearly being fans of Russia. (And didn't a Reform candidate say we shouldn't have fought the Nazis?)

I think the sway that Reform and Gaza have had on the results bodes very ill for the direction of politics.

Votebank politics comes to Britain

murasaki · 05/07/2024 14:21

I thought Jess had picked some of the splinters out of her arse from fence sitting on twaw.

Either way, I thought the strong woman bit was about standing up bravely to the utter misogynists attacking her and her team. And their tyres. Shocking behaviour.
