Green Party - leave me the fuck alone!

In a hotly contested seat here and Greens and Labour are neck and neck.

I've been inundated with leaflets from the Greens, probably every day for the last 3 weeks. We've had canvassers to the door. And then yesterday, I got home to a hand delivered letter, with my full name and address written by hand on the front of the envelope (in a writing I didn't recognise). The kids had been in and the doorbell hadn't rung.

I've been in a DV relationship that ended about 6 months ago and I completely freaked out that it was something from my ex. I was even worried that it might contain some sort of poison to finish me off.

Eventually I managed to pluck up the courage to open it (in the garden, not that that would have stopped my demise if it had contained anything poisonous) and it was ANOTHER fucking letter from the Greens asking me to vote for them. I was so pissed off (and still in fight/flight mode) that I sent an email to the local candidate saying that posting hand written envelopes was a step too far, and although I'd considered voting Green, there was no way I was going to now.

To be fair, I did get back quite a nice (and speedy) reply from someone from the policy response team apologising and thanking me for making them aware that some of their campaigning techniques were going a bit far and that they hadn't considered the impact of hand addressed/posted letters on people.

And then just now, at not even midday, I've had a bloody Green representative at the door asking if I've voted. I gave him short shrift and told him in no uncertain terms that I have voted, and not Green, and that I feel the level of contact has been bordering on harassment. It's too much! Poor bloke was only out doing his job, but honestly, just fuck off now!

Has anyone else had this much campaigning at their door?

I don't know if this is applicable to you OP but I really understand your anxiety around a handwritten and delivered envelope given the circumstances.

Literally no one has been to see us. I feel a bit neglected, totally politically homeless and no idea what to vote 😂

I am so sorry you have had that level of contact though - it’s ridiculous and feels marginally like intimidation. I was a member of the Greens at one point but can’t get past their TWAW status so could never vote for them.

PickAChew · 04/07/2024 12:25

None, here. Safe Labour seat. We've mad a couple of leaflets, one from the Reform candidate, Surname Belch, which gave us a few moments of mirth dreaming up slogans like "Belch for Common Sense." and "Belch for Britain."

NippyCrab · 04/07/2024 12:27

We've had no canvassers at all, not a lot of leaflets either. The green party broadcast on TV was awful and we both agreed that if we had chosen to vote for them that would have swayed us to not to give them our vote.

Brefugee · 04/07/2024 12:28

Get in touch with the people who replied to you before and tell them what you told the caller today.
And ask them where you can recycle all the stuff they've given you since it isn't useful as toilet paper.

FOJN · 04/07/2024 12:28

And to answer your question, yes I've had that level of intense campaigning once before.

41 leaflets or letters in about 2 weeks, all from the Lib Dems. 3 flyers in the 14 hours before the polls opened. I was really pissed off and wondered how much it would cost the council to recycle all that additional paper waste. I decided if the bastards did it again I was going to tape each one up on the glass of my front door along with a polite fuck off notice.

Thank you so much for this, I didn't know it existed!

Are you Central Bristol by any chance? We got one of those letters yesterday and get leaflets daily. No reps at the door as yet (although our flat buzzer has gone off a couple of times - don't tend to answer if I'm not expecting anyone!). They're really REALLY pushing Carla here.

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 04/07/2024 12:34

I think they must be targeting resources at the seats they think that can win.

I've had nothing here, except from the Tories, Labour and one independent (there are 9 candidates here)

I'm sorry you've been inundated

Neither did I until this morning and only happened upon it by accident. Hope it's useful.

After the first few trees' worth of leaflets, I decided I wasn't going to stop the puppy getting to them first.

She's very apolitical in her shredding.

Yep. I had actually been considering voting Green before all of this, but it's a definite no from me now! (For other reasons as well as this one!)

Yes, the irony is not lost on me of all of the trees that the Greens must have felled for all of these sodding leaflets.

Bristol Central too! The amount of stuff through the door has been crazy. I really felt for the people who had to sit down and address all the envelopes. I don't think the Greens did themselves any favours with the OTT campaining, in the end.

Yeah the first time a leaflet came through I was quite impressed with how proactive they were.

20 or so leaflets in and it's just annoying 😅

Me too but now I'm sticking with Thangam

We had nine candidates and got leaflets from Labour (lots), Green, Alliance for Green Socialism, LibDem, Tory, Workers' Party and the independent, who turned out to be an evangelical Christian and Pro Life candidate. Her leaflet had several images that must have been distressing for women who've experienced pregnancy loss and infertility, as well as some who've had a termination of pregnancy. I hope and trust her votes don't get into three figures. The Communist and Reform candidates wisely saved their money. Not a single canvasser. Labour is a shoo in here.

HowDidJudithSurvive · 04/07/2024 13:34

We are in a labour safe seat and haven’t had a single knock at the door. We have had one labour leaflet and that’s it.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 04/07/2024 13:37

Back in the day when I cared enough about politics to get involved one of my roles was to handwrite those envelopes but they had "ELECTION COMMUNICATION" printed on them so there was no confusion and you could just sling them in the bin.

I'll keep an eye out for the Bristol Central result....

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/07/2024 13:41

I have a close friend in the greens and they are, yes. About 3 or 4 seats. He got asked by email to go to Brighton to campaign for Sian Berry, it's miles away!

Spaghetti127 · 04/07/2024 13:51

I had a hand written letter from my Labour candidate, scared me as well as about a year ago we got some random threatening letters through the post. Not a good tactic

RedVanYellowVan · 04/07/2024 13:54

OP, that is dreadful, I hope they learn their lesson.

Nothing from the greens here. To compensate the LibDems have been putting loads of stuff through the door, glossy leaflets (which go in the recying) and 2 page newspapers which our neighbours are grateful for to line their cat litter tray.

If the weather had been drier I was thinking of cutting all the various leaflets (we have had eight) into triangles and making bunting to festoon the front garden in a non-partisan way.

EasterlyDirections · 04/07/2024 13:59

That would have had me voting for someone else as well as complaining. We have had one leaflet from each party except Reform. No one has come to the door.

A woman I know is heavily involved in our local Labour party and she says the safe constituencies were all paired off with less safe or target seats and asked to send people there to help out with canvassing etc. Makes sense.
