Why will the UK be the only (?) European country to return a left wing government?

I hope we do and I know the polls think it's a done deal, but why will we be so different to everywhere else in Europe?

We know right wing voters don't necessarily admit it...

Not that Labour is especially Left Wing, but yes, they're not reactionary right-wing populism at least.

There's an obvious reason to me, which is Brexit - it has left most people dismayed with the populists who brought it about. Also that we have a RW government for so long, so we are flipping the opposite way to much of Europe.

Poland? Finland? Sweden? Denmark?

Yes I was just thinking this earlier and thought it was interesting. People talk about societal or political 'cycles'. It might be that we are simply a few years ahead or behind other countries cycles. If we are ahead then as pp says perhaps the backlash we had against the EU is being repeated elsewhere just later on with added pressure of post COVID and cost of living pressure.

We won’t be, for two reasons.

Firstly, Starmer’s Labour Party is hardly ‘left wing’, by any standards.

Secondly, the current German government is a coalition in which the centre-left SPD, led by the Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is the largest party.

Our Labour Party is about as far from left wing as the Conservatives are. Both parties are very middle of the road. Labour is no longer the party of the working man.

People are voting Labour because they want a change of government and Labour are the only party that would win enough seats to form a government. That's it.

Agree.
Reform are the only right wing Party here

Voters here want a change.

Had we had 14 years of Labour we’d be going Conservative now and visa versa.
Other countries are dealing, I understand, with large scale immigration and are just looking for a different Party to deal with that. Right wing parties take a harder line on immigration which is why they are turning.

My take is that we are ahead and have had our major right wing spasm in 2016.

But it will be interesting on France. A lot of comment there about how Macron is making similar mistakes to Cameron re Brexit.

Bobsanidiot · 03/07/2024 19:02

Left wing? There aren't enough left wing candidates to form a government. Apart from a brief blip with Jeremy Corbyn Labour hasn't been remotely left wing since before Tony Blair.

mitogoshi · 03/07/2024 19:05

Simple, we aren't. Germany is centre left as are many others
