General election 2024

Reform Ltd's contract would cost twice Liz Truss' cost to our mortagages.

AIBU to wonder why anyone would vote for a massive extension of the Brexit/Truss created CoL crisis?

I heard on the radio this afternoon that Reform plan to maintain current public services, but cut every department budget by 5%.

Free unicorns for everyone then!

They're talking about huge cuts and maintaining services. Lower tax yet pumping millions into the NHS, which they want to base on the French model. Military in the police, the end of 'woke' and reduced human rights for all.

They're going to take migrants back to France, apparently with no consent from the French. And cut down on 'non essential' immigration - quite the U turn.

Costs of this 'contract' apparently run into the billions. Not that it's been costed.

No plans to change the 'corrupt establishment', probably because he's part of it.

Well, I'm sold!

All sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

They don't care about having workable policies, just about making money and publicity for Farage. They are appealing purely to people who dont like immigration (with no real proposals for how to restructure the workforce which is reliant on migrant labour). They know they don't have a chance of winning more than one seat maximum but if they make a lot of noise they might have more people paying to be supporters/members. Even if he did win, Farage would probably only be an MP for about 6 months before he got fed up of having to do more than appear in the pub for a photo shoot. He's already professed his disgust at the idea of spending every Friday in Clacton.

My reading of the Reform Ltd "contract" is that they aren't even saying they will cut migration. They seem to be content with essential migration, which is the vast majority of the migration we have at the moment (perhaps excluding BNO passport holders in some cases?)

They blame immigration for 'broken Britain.' Yet aren't going to do anything to turn Britain around. No investment, no training, not touching the markets, not touching the system that brought us to our knees.

They're coming after the poor and vulnerable though. Oh yes and more reliance on fossil fuels and fracking. Lots of fracking.

Don't be wary of anyone who wants to reduce basic human rights. They only have your best interest at heart.

Surely a party that professes not to like uncontrolled migration, would be keen to deal with the major causes of that migration - inequality and climate change.

Apparently not.

Farage doesn't want the hassle of a constituency. He wants to go to the States and support that bastion of freedom and democracy; Trump.

Self evidently Farage doesn't believe in democracy, else he wouldn't have appointed himself leader of a company pretending to be a political party.

I haven't read the whole contract but I'm sure I'm just coming to the part on more investment in international development, less involvement in other States, more investment in the Environment and more international cooperation. I'll get there soon!

Don't tell anyone that Farage wasn't elected and that he's a major shareholder in a private company with no democratic process. They might catch on and see it as an indication of what's coming.

Clacton is one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Nearby Jaywick is the most deprived area of the UK. Let's hope they see sense.

Off topic but I am totally up for a 'Liz Truss' to become a unit of economic measurement, especially when measuring the impact of government fiscal decisions on the rest of us.

This policy will cost 2 Liz Trusses
That one will cost 1 Liz Truss
This one will save us 1.5 Liz Trusses

Grin

If by any bizaare chance they did get into power there'd soon be a new party emerging on their right claiming that Reform had "sold out" as it proved completely incapable of doing any of this.

If you want to live with private wealth and public squalor then vote Reform - and that's probably a best-case scenario where the economy and government doesn't collapse completely.

Luminousalumnus · 20/06/2024 11:07

He's pretty sure to win Clacton.

It will be interesting to see how Reform develops given the type of candidates they seem to attract. Farage left UKIP after they took on Tommy Robinson as an advisor.

I wouldn't worry about anything Reform say because they won't win . Your worry should be about Labour who will tax you to the heavens .

I'm worried about Reform having an influence on the policies of other parties. A conservative/Reform coalition would be horrific

Shortfatsuit · 20/06/2024 11:40

The thing about Reform is that they can't really lose. They rely on a certain section of the electorate voting for them because they lack the intelligence and/or motivation to critically analyse what Reform is actually putting forward, and they know that they will never get enough people actually voting for their shit to mean that they will ever have to actually implement anything.

So they can say whatever they like without consequence, but the really clever bit is that, in doing so, they can put pressure on the Tories (and perhaps others) to move further and further to the right. They are a very effective - and dangerous - pressure group.
