General election 2024

Will there even be enough room for Labour MPs?

So there are 650 MPs but only 427 actual physical seats in the House of Commons or 213 on the Government side and 213 on the opposition side.

Now if Labour win around 450 MPs as predicted- where are they actually going to physically sit as there are only seats for less than half of them?

They'll have to squish up a bit.

This is a problem I look forward to having.

Standing room only - as it often is if you ever see any key debates. Labour had 418 MPs after the 1997 GE and 412 after 2001 GE. They muddled through somehow. 😀

Hmm - how about only selecting small Labour candidates or at least only those with small bums (which I guess completely rules me out!).

You can count on one hand the times that the Houses of Parliament are actually full every year so it's not really a problem.

It's rare for all MPs to be there at the same time, but when they are, lots stand.

I also look forward to this problem.

That's a big assumption that MPs bother to turn up most the time!

ItsPrettyGoodReally · 17/06/2024 18:02

I would love to see this problem. For me I would ideally like to see all the other non-spaces taken up by libdems and Greens.

It will also mean that when all the opposition MPs all turn up, the benches will still have empty spaces!

@Thingscanonlygetsunk

"It will also mean that when all the opposition MPs all turn up, the benches will still have empty spaces"

I was just thinking about how this will look on TV with one side rammed and standing room only and the other side fairly empty,

At least there should be room for Jacob Reece Mogg to have another lie down provided of course that he is re elected.

It is only tradition that the government sits to the speaker's right and opposition to the speaker's left. In the past, some MPs have sat on the "wrong" side and have even been called to speak from there. If there is room, MPs can also sit in the Stranger's Gallery, but are unlikely to be called to speak.
