Sunak aid bet on election date before announcement.

More sleeze. One of Sunak's aides has admitted to placing a bet on the election date before it was announced.

It feels like one thing after the other. I realise no matter what they do some voters will give the Tories a free pass but there are so many gaffes, so much sleeze, lies, deliberate miscalculations.

It's aide not aide in the title. I cannot amend.

I wonder if Sunak bet on a large Labour majority…

Gladanotthwrteamonesomething · 13/06/2024 05:50

@AmpleFatball it's not a definite that there will be a large Labour landfall. The Conservative government have a massive majority and it will take a huge swing to overturn it. It could be closer than people think.

Many Conservative voters just stay quiet then vote. It's happened before.

That few are surprised at the aide putting money on a date a few days before its announced shows how used to sleeze this country is.

I'm not sure he needs the money. His advisors might have though. I'm not sure the missing D day commemorations was a good idea.

Sleaze and corruption is how they’ll be remembered.

So he was going to make, what, £500? Like the VIP lane of the PPE contacts. The arrogance of it all. Sleaze and corruption.

CurrentHun · 13/06/2024 06:46

The arrogance and grubbiness of it all. Corruption is just baked in to Toryism at this point. It’s very sad. I always said once Boris johnson with his disgusting lack of personal and professional morality was allowed to lead the party, that it would become riddled with crooks, and it is. No moral leadership actually matters. The fish rots from the head,

CurrentHun · 13/06/2024 07:32

just reading further- he’s actually a Parliamentary Candidate!! Words fail me. That should be an instant deselection.
The Tories really haven’t learned from johnson and Sunak being fined over Covid. Lawbreakers should not be rewarded with public office. They should be ousted immediately. And this Tory candidate is being investigated for breaking the law.

And please notice that I say ‘should be ousted’ which is a very sad sign of today’s Tory times, because in the old days when caught red handed- politicians used to do the decent thing and resign. No longer, since there is a complete moral vacuum there. Anything goes. We should not be expected to accept this as the standard for politicians. It’s terrible.

RosaRoja · 13/06/2024 07:36

I agree @CurrentHun looks like he wanted to make a quick buck with insider knowledge. That’s the Tory standard now.

ActivePeony · 13/06/2024 08:06

Sunak is surrounded by idiots who have seemingly sabotaged his campaign.

AddersAtDawn · 13/06/2024 08:14

Yup, that about sums up 14 years...

Sabotage, or has he surrounded himself by incompetents? Or he’s just so, so out of touch with ordinary life. He’s a twit.

Shock When I saw this, I thought it was unfortunate for the Tories that a daft junior too young to know better had done this, but that it wasn't really a sign of corruption in the Tory government – because this guy looks about 12 and I assumed they'd been stretching the term "aide" and he'd just been a tea-boy for 10 minutes in his college vacation.

But no.

Turns out he's Sunak's Parliamentary Private Secretary and standing as a Tory MP.

I just... I can't.

It's endemic, isn't it? This is the culture at the heart of Tory Downing Street in 2024. This is what they now think is OK.

I don't want Reform to gain power. But this current Tory party needs to be rebuilt from the bottom up. To a party of integrity which wants the best for the country, not just a bunch of carpet-baggers who see time in the office as an opportunity to loot the silver before being turfed out.

It's this behaviour which is creating the environment for parties like Reform. Services are degraded, the rich get richer, and those who are struggling and feel hopeless flock closer and closer to fascism, with its shining banners and simplistic scapegoating of AN Other.

People said they liked Boris because of his personality. Some people have said on these threads they cannot vote for Starmer because he's boring.

I'd take boring man who doesn't have numerous kids with numerous women, sleeze and lies his way through life with a bug bubbly silly way about him. I mean we need quiet, confidence leadership not bumff and sleeze.

I didn't realise he was a candidate. Wow. Is he still going to stand after this bet which he admitted?

Sunak is just following in his two predecessors' footsteps in lurching from crisis to crisis. In his case, it seems to be due to a mix of incompetence and arrogance which means that he doesn't have advisers who will tell him the truth and he wouldn't listen to them anyway.

It may be the making of the party if they lose. Start again and clear the sleeze and corruption.

They certainly won't manage to change if they don't get voted out this time round.

They need some time in opposition to work out who they want to be, and why.

We always need a good quality His Majesty's Loyal Opposition.

Many Conservative voters just stay quiet then vote.

Shy Tories are THE WORST. Surely you believe what you're voting for? And if you believe it, OWN it!

It's a Tory seat. So will he keep it, if enough Tory voters don't care about him being 'foolish' then he will.

No one needs to 'own it' re: voting. We have a private ballot for a good reason, to avoid bullying and voter coercion.

caringcarer · 13/06/2024 14:06

Probably the same aide that told him to leave the D day commemorations early! Sunak is useless. He needs to sack this aide for gross misconduct. I can't wait for him to go.

BardsAreAssholes · 13/06/2024 14:10

Imagine being both this sleazy and this low-rent.

Pissing any perception of integrity up the wall for a paltry £500. Not just morally bereft, but cheap with it.

LlynTegid · 13/06/2024 14:36

Whilst wrong and let's await the outcome, it is much less than some Tory MPs practices such as contracts for mates in 2020.
