General election 2024

When is it worth voting tactically?

I’m not sure how far down the list of Labour or Lib Dem targets my constituency is. Second place swings between the two, but the Tories have a twenty thousand majority. It’s not worth voting tactically, is it?

There is a site that can tell you who best to vote for in your area!

stopthetories.vote/

GettingTetchy · 13/06/2024 15:25

Thanks. It says the instruction is coming soon.

Same! I fear that even with this our vote will still be split!

frankentall · 14/06/2024 08:46

I have this problem. I live in a safe Tory seat but this election is about our best chance to change that, but historically the non-Tory vote has been equally split between Lib Dem and Labour. I would glady vote for either to unseat the Tory but without knowing everyone else's plans it could go wrong. This happend once before when I bet on Lib Dem but most of the non Tories voted Labour and that split allowed the Tory to remain. Our voting system, combined with the way parties operate is shit and prevents us from voting for what we want as our vote is ignored.

GettingTetchy · 14/06/2024 10:27

It’s almost always more than fifty per cent Tory here. In theory the minor boundary change should make it even more Tory so I might as well vote the way I want.
There seem to be several tactical voting sites now that I look, including the one above and https://www.getvoting.org. I hope they all give the same message.

Tactical voting should be easier this time as Labour and LibDems are de facto cooperating in their target seats.

I live in a LibDem seat but if I put my postcode into the Labour volunteer website it asks me to go to a constituency twenty miles away to campaign. There are two constituencies closer to my address so these are clearly being left for the LibDems.

Best for Britain says their tactical recommendations (released on Monday) will be partly based on on-the-ground info about who's targeting what as well as polling data.

paasll · 14/06/2024 14:22

I would suggest that if the tories have a 20,000 majority and you reasonably expect them to lose some/all of that majority, those particular voters would be more likely to change their vote to lib dem rather than labour.

The tactical voting sites are often full of shit. The vote advised in my area is wrong. It only takes into account the 2019 results. Nothing else. No local knowledge/developments.

Not in my area. Both Lib Dem and labour are saying they are number two after the tories and to vote for them to get the tories out (we were a safe Tory seat but the boundaries have changed so they've all been round this year after hearing nothing from anyone for the many years I've lived here!). Very unhelpful anyway. I said to the labour person who came round "can't you get together, at this rate the tories will get in again if the vote gets split" and she says they don't do that because of the first past the post system?!? I thought isn't that exactly why you SHOULD be doing that! But what do I know?!?

There are a few places like this - Wimbledon is one.

Frostynight · 14/06/2024 19:46

@GettingTetchy you may well be in the same constituency as me. Polls are currently showing a slight Labour lead, but the boundary changes make it really hard to predict. Lib Dems hold the council, but I think that Labour could do it.

I am told that, because it is so hard to tell, Labour are not actively campaigning in this seat either.

I'm voting Labour anyway.

GettingTetchy · 18/06/2024 07:01

I think I’ll vote Labour. On further research, If the Tories don’t win here, they’ll be down to about twenty seats. Labour appear to be in second place but the gap is closing. It’s probably not worth voting tactically.

Thanks for all the advice and comments.

I’ve always voted tactically. But having a conversation with DH last night, I think if I lived in the seat farage is standing in, I’d vote Tory. Anything against that scumbag.

GettingTetchy · 18/06/2024 07:12

I would vote tactically against Farage. I hope the most likely alternative is clear.
