General election 2024

What is Labour's stance on 30 hours universal childcare starting from 9 months old?

I read the Labour party's manifesto yesterday and couldn't see any clear indication about the current government's childcare policy rolling out Sep 2025 about 9 months and above getting 30 hours free childcare for working parents.
Like me, many parents need to budget for childcare who are currently pregnant or expecting soon and would be good to get clarity on that.

No you didn’t, the manifesto isn’t published until Thursday.

I'd just plan to budget for it as you don't know what they'll do until they confirm and if they keep it, you have some extra cash to play with.

Has the union UNITE ticked off Labours maniefesto??

Bells3032 · 11/06/2024 10:45

I am assuming this is what is meant to refer to the hours but will have to wait for the full manifesto:

  • Labour will deliver the enhanced entitlements the government have offered, saving thousands of pounds a year for working families.
MariaVT65 · 11/06/2024 10:47

The BBC news article i read yesterday about the extra nursery places said Labour had committed to continue the childcare funding. But I, like you, am waiting for more clarification on this as it is the ultimate issue that affects me personally over the next few years and it will be directing my vote.

Hoping to get clarity, that would definitely be a key point in who we vote for.

I'd like nurseries to only get funding if they stop the stupidity of 'nursery graduation', just as I would like no school ever to be able to be rated outstanding id they host proms.

Won't happen though.

I assume the clarity will come on Thursday with the manifesto, but I'm pretty certain they have previously committed to keeping it.

Reversing it would be a massive thing to do, especially as it's already been rolled out for 2 year olds.

WithACatLikeTread · 11/06/2024 16:17

I think they plan to keep it.

Why? What’s that got to do with how good an education they provide? I like the graduation and proms.

Over celebrating normal events I don't think is good, especially as when any don't go quite as planned, it leads to disappointment or worse.

I quite like the various celebration nurseries do, there's already lots of gloom and doom in the world, everyone can do with a bit of celebration.

Why not allow some fun? They’re just fun events that most kids enjoy. If you don’t like it don’t go but don’t spoil it for others.

Overthebow · 11/06/2024 17:52

My dd has her nursery graduation next month, she’s so excited and they’ve been working on a graduation song. I think it’s actually good for school transition, it gets them excited and engaged in preparing for school and let’s them mark the end of 3-4 years of nursery before school begins.

SearchingDory · 14/06/2024 10:06

As the manifesto is out now, is there any clarity on this?

Yes. Creation of 3000 new nurseries to make it a reality, not a pipe dream.
