Thought I’d start a thread ready for tonight’s debate on ITV. Starts at 9pm.

For those that want further analysis, Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart will be doing a live response on their TRIP YouTube Channel at 10pm. We’ll put the link up on this thread when it starts.

So, it's a watch this space, read the manifesto? Is there a time limit for manifestos to come out?

Some time in the next week probably.

This Guardian article shows where the £2000 comes from.
Also a reasonable summary/fact check of the debate.

Very good thanks.

The country needs a change - but what IS Starmer's plan? None the wiser after the debate

Considering his previous jobs, Starmer was very poor tonight I thought. Not sure Rishi did enough to win him the election, but he handled that debate much better than Starmer did.

I've also found the full fact website helpful

Where has this £2000 come from, is that accurate?

It’s come from the civil service. Labour can’t just reply on adding a bit of vat on private school fees to pay for everything. If you believe that then you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I worry they will bring out the cheque book, spend money like there’s no tomorrow, and then it will be working families that are crippled with massive tax increases and our children will be left to deal with the debt for years to come.

@Hedgeoffressian it's come from the civil service using parameters given to them by conservative advisors. No one seems to believe that they are correct.

CaveMum · 04/06/2024 23:24

I recommend listening to last week’s The Rest is Money podcast which is an interview with Head of the IFS Paul Johnson about his thoughts on both sides and their economic plans. He is VERY doubtful about the claims (from both sides) that they won’t put taxes up.

No, you can't blame the CS! It's the Tories making it up. Martin Lewis has a bit to say about it.

And if you're worried about opening the cheque book and crippling families with massive tax increases I think you need to take a look at the record of the current government with their massive tax hikes.
